Temat: Facebook addiction is damaging your child's brain

Real-life chatting is, after all, far more perilous than in the cyber world as it occurs in real time, with no opportunity to think up clever responses, and it requires a sensitivity to voice tone, body language and even to physical chemicals such as pheromones.
None of these skills is required when chatting on a networking site. In fact, one user told me: 'You become less conscious of the individuals involved (including yourself), less inhibited, less embarrassed and less concerned about how you will be evaluated.'
In other words, Facebook does not require the subtleties of social skill we need in the real world. Not only will this impair individuals' ability to communicate - and build relationships - it could completely change how conversation happens.

Any kind of addiction is dangerous for health and relationships.

The old style media likes picking on the new (?) formations like twitter and facebook, and mostly missing the point.

There's at least one good comment to that article, which goes:

"When will we stop confusing format with content?

There are deadly dull people in the world. Yes, they use facebook and twitter. It's not Facebook and Twitter that made them deadly dull people.

Twitter is a tool, just like a camera is a tool. It is the person behind it that can make good use of it or not. Some people make good use of school and college, others cheat and bluff their way through. That is human nature - for many humans."

We forgot how to educate our children in a proper way. That's the real subject we need to discuss.
It is always easier to put a distance, it is always easier to say: "go to your room and play", because that's how we like it.

Totally agree.

I might agree with the premise of the article if in face kids these days did not engage at all in face to face communication. However, this is clearly not the case.

People do still talk face to face.

People prefer it, I think.

'You become less conscious of the individuals involved (including yourself), less inhibited, less embarrassed and less concerned about how you will be evaluated.'

and exactly what's wrong with becoming "less embarrassed" ?
I guess I'm missing the point here, cause honestly, to my silly mind, people have been way too concerned about "what will the others think of me". Who cares anyways? as long as you're not hurting anyone anythingoes, or should go. Hate the "it's not the done thing" mentality:)

Cheers!

PS: face-to-face IS much better, but thanx to facebook and the like we can follow what's going on with our friends on all the 5 continents - can't really do face2face with them on a regular basis, can you now?

Facebook gives me no social life at all. For me it's not transparent enough and too chaotic.
I prefer real life contact, so I just get back in touch via FB :)

There's a tendency to use contrastives such as "real life" versus "online".

I would argue that "Online" is just as much a part of "real life" as the telephone, if not more so.

Perhaps the contrastives should be "virtual" versus "face to face". I think that "online" is a good alternative when "face to face" is not possible.

People have always found ways to communicate with each other over longer distances. I think things like Facebook are a more advanced version of pigeons/ telegrams/ letters/ the telephone etc.

And why not?

I totally agree.
That thought is usually a waste of time. People don't stop thinking about me in a way that I don't like but maybe I can affect how do they think about me in first place.
And I'm 100% sure, the way I use Facebook gives more/better ideas about me, about who I am, even to my closest ones.

Sometimes a simple photo can describe what I am into much more than words used in a chit-chat.ilter K. edytował(a) ten post dnia 28.04.09 o godzinie 08:21

@ Steve. It is indeed more advanced way of sending pigeons maybe, yet FB's user interface sucks no matter what.

And I made no contrastives, just said what I prefer.

I prefer face to face contact too.. I guess most people do in the end...

Does Skype blur the issue? Is that real life or online?

Yes, FB's interface sucks ass!

Depends if you know the person or not. If it includes a voice contact and is used in business even among people who don't know each other, then it's still the form of nonpersonal contact which doesn't really change one's behaviour or the way a person interacts in face to face situations.

It is not a new discovery that the net society is the one of people showing no empathy to others in need. Instead of offering help people usually say: "your problem dude". It is a fact confirmed by science (well until it is confirmed otherwise:D).

So if I show empathy and you show empathy, does it prove the thesis wrong? No, it only means that we were quite old when the internet became the common usage good. We weren't raised by it so we use it and are not abused by the VR. As someone said above, it depends how we raise the kids.

There we agree on that one :)

FB (and other similar "communities") is a great tool to reconnect with old friends. I opened an account with FB almost two years ago and never, ever used it until now. And I like it :)

Keeps me busy. Better than booze, pills, and sending pathetic messages to Dave on GL :D

I reconnected with an old friend, Steve Jones. Now there's two of you on my list!

Facebook is ok ;)
I can keep in touch with friends that I have in Poland still, which is not easy when you are far away...

And I have been using it quite a lot since I moved to the Netherlands... to keep me busy as well on lonely weekends, which were terrible, when I didn't know anyone there...
I am also not affraid to say that I've met few new people thanks to FB, and I do not regret it... How could I? I've met my boyfriend there, and FB helped us find eachother ;)

I wish you all the best for your NL experience, and the most, that you will be able to settle down there especially after you found your love :)

I also have an FB account, and I play with it a bit, keep in touch with some people I met in NL during my stay there.

But with the closest ones I have a daily contact via Skype, or phone very often. We meet each other as well regularly. So I wish you also a lot of free time to keep in touch with your friends and folks, not only via FB.

Say hi to NL from me, I love that country still :)

That's not easy when all your friends are in different country :) I am trying to see them every time I am in Poland, and I have contact via phone as well...
But I still hope for more vacation days to be able to visit PL more often :)
(or more money for my friend so they can visit me :P)

Done :D
