Might be a bit strange, but I think that there's a heavy charge here which is deeply intertwined in the history of the English vs. non-English speaking cultures. I guess this is a question mainly aimed at the natives on this forum, but I'd like to hear everyone's opinion... you know.. the remaining "everyones".

What's the fundamental difference between the two?Rafal Wolk edytował(a) ten post dnia 24.08.11 o godzinie 13:20

Yea, that seems to be the basic idea I guess. I was thinking more in terms of nations with colonial past vs. the rest of the world.

I think it's a pretty good question.

I've always thought immigrants had rather serious reasons to leave their home country like political, economical and survival. At least the majority anyway. And also, just like Joj wrote, there's the permanency.

An expat has taken up residence in a foreign country for some time while an immigrant settles permanently.

I have found quite an interesting article written by A. Kureth who calls himself an immigrant to Poland. Worth giving a thought.
