I would apply zero tolerance policy to drink-driving as it endangers lives of innocent motorists and pedestrians, although in general I am not a hard-liner.

Those who are caught drink-driving should have their driving licenses revoked permanently, for there is little chance that those with chronic drinking problems (as only such people drive under the influence of alcohol) would ever mend their ways.

I never, ever have do it and never would.

In my opinion many people in Poland still do it just because of bad habit - it used to be tolerated and turned a blind eye towards for years.

So many of the people I know have their maximum amount of alcohol they believe they can consume before they reach the forbidden level of alcohol. Especially with beer.

So they drink one, and they drive away. Do you think it's ok?
(the measuring equipment most probably wouldn't show anything but still they've had some %)

I think that the real danger - at least in downtown Warsaw on a Saturday night - is driving after snorting cocaine. Drunks are not so frequent, mainly owing to breathalyser spot checks. The police are virtually helpless when it comes to detecting cocaine or dope. Perhaps out of town it may not be the case and vodka still rules the streets.

Sure, there are also tipsy drivers, who may be divided into two categories: those who cannot afford a taxi or http://nightdrivers.pl, and those who simply wish to flaunt their ride in front of the club.

I've tried DUI once, but that was plain stupidity. After half a bottle of whisky the lamposts in Sikorskiego Street blurred into one hyperspace smudge... Never again. Nobody under any circumstance should ever under any condition drive drunk. It’s probably one of the most retarded thing one can do.

If you can’t walk, see or talk straight, what makes you think that you can get into a ton and a half of steel, capable of speeds up to and beyond 100mph and control it better than your own body at that moment?

Having said that… I’ve done and I will never do it again.

I agree with Rafal that it's one of the stupidest thing a person could do. My dad used to work in the "CSI" and I've heard enough stories about drunken drivers and the victims of their recklessness.

Alcohol is that one conundrum in the history of human kind that no matter what it may cause, it will forever be around. In comparison to other drugs (yes, alcohol is a drug no matter how you slice it) it is probably in the top 5 when it comes to physical and mental damages that it causes. It is also #1 killer out of all available drugs, legal and otherwise.

It is a powerful depressant; in some it provokes anger, territoriality, violence and other such pleasant behaviors that we’ve tried to drop after dropping our lizard’s tail. It leads to murder, accidents, child and spousal abuse, hospitalization and death… yet the label only warns of driving and pregnancy complications.

There is a great reason why in poor parts of many countries liquor stores occupy every other corner. Self destruction replacing the natural selection process.

If it was a life or death situation with no available alternative I might judge it to be a calculated risk. However, my judgement may be impaired
Do you ever do it yourself?
No. In the sense that I don't drive while drunk. I do have a beer and then two hours later drive since the human organism processes the alcohol content of one beer per two hours. I even proved it by being breathalised by the police two hours after one beer. The reading was a big zero.
