Egoism is natural ;)

It sure is, so is territoriality, rape, sodomy and killing of the weaker or sick.

How often do you do something that you do not like?
Once a day.
How hard is to refuse?
Very hard :)
Where are the limitations of free-of-charge help?
Time is the biggest and only important limitation. Sometimes I forget that I have a job to finish while trying to help, and that's bad :)

Yes, it was great... I've managed to sonically assault some innocent bystanders in Montreal... good times!

I apologise, but I'm going to get back to the point for a wee second:).
Lidia K.:
Looking at the GL groups where some people are quite helpful...

Some people are helpful. That's good. A lot of them tries to be helpful. That's worse.
Being a nice person, do you do things that you're specialist in for free?
When do you decide that you're going to do it?
Who are the people you're willing to help?

There's a problem: People often do not know what do they need - especially in groups Ad/Copywriting/Design. Let's face it: Advertising is expensive. It's complicated, and even tho a bunch of people think they can do it during lunchbreaks - they can't. Unfotunately they try, so every day there are new posts asking for stuff. For example:

Someone decided to open a company. They need a name. They go to a group called Copywriters something-something, because someone told them that copywriters do that stuff.

They post "Could you create a name for me company. I don't have any money. I plan to make money with the name. Thanks very much".

Well, the answer for this is "Yes, I could." Nothing more, coz I wouldn't dare to try to name a company without research. But let's rephrase the situation a bit:

Q: "I'm planning a dinner - can you help me?"

Answer 1 - the one that should be given:
Assuming that it's a dinner party I would reccomend this recipe [link]. You can buy all the stuff you need here: [link]. Tip: Remember to cook the turtle at least for 3 days.
If you don't like all the work, go to Andre's and order a duck. Don't forget the sauces.

Answer 2 - the one that is expeced:
Ok, I already started cooking the six dishes I planned for you. I will bring it to your apartment today, and serve it to you, while singing: Please choose the reprtoire, if you have a spare minute. Also, If you don't have an apartment, use mine. I will try to move out today.
Please, please call me at work,
Regards,
Bob, CEO with shitloads of free time.

Answer 3 - the one usually there:
Leave a window open. On my lunchbreak I will toss some roadkill thru it. Boil it in dishwater.
Regards,
Joe, an unemployed carpenter.

When I see the third option (and I see it a lot - people throwing random ideas for names, slogans, campaigns) I sometimes try to help, suggesting that roadkill wouldn't be my choice for the party - what I get in return is a suggestion that I should find some quiet place and sodomize myself, since I am a negative, whiny boob.

Also, as mentioned before, the help is often not needed. You don't start with a name. You start with a business plan.
"I'm homeless. I want to have a dinner party at a giant mansion - do you have any recipies?"

Have you received any high skilled (not not so skilled) service for free?

Service? Only not skilled. But a lot of advice.
Do you think people's eagerness to help in your environment has changed over the years?

Nope.
Can things that are free be equally good???

Nope. Even if they are, they are treated like garbage. As a student, I've worked witha friend on a CI system for a company. A good one, with many ideas and a plan for introducing it to the company. Company was grateful, said that they like it, and then threw it in the garbage. They used CI without any coherent system, drawn in MS Paint by the boos.

So:
Help people with stuff, but don't do stuff for people.Kuba Nowak edytował(a) ten post dnia 06.01.09 o godzinie 12:53

I agree, that it is a nice post, adding a little different perspective to the subject.
But there are things that I don't understand.

For example:
Kuba Nowak:
Can things that are free be equally good???

Nope. Even if they are, they are treated like garbage...
So, which one do you think?
... As a student, I've worked witha friend on a CI system for a company. [...] Company was grateful, said that they like it, and then threw it in the garbage....
So what do you mean... your "dream smashing" experience effects the reality that "free" help (or service) given by somebody/some institution can be equally good?
So:
Help people with stuff, but don't do stuff for people.
Aha, that's the summary? :)

Well... yeah. I've lost some logic on the way:).
For example:

Free stuff is only as good as the help it brings (since no money flows, there is no 'value' as such). I know it's not a 100% sure thing, but usually free work is treated like nothing -> so it's nothing -> so it's not as good as the same thing bought.

(Again - not a rule. A PC fixed by someone is a fixed PC no matter the price of the fixing;>).

It wasn't dream smashing. It just pissed me off. Now I get paid for that stuff, so I don't care* that much if the people do something with what they bought.

*well... I do care, but my pain of loosing an oportunity to make the world a better place is somehow easier to bear, because of the dough:).
So:
Help people with stuff, but don't do stuff for people.
Aha, that's the summary? :)

No, that's the advice:).
Also, my post shows my view of my own 'environement'. It's probably different if you're in a different kind of business.Kuba Nowak edytował(a) ten post dnia 06.01.09 o godzinie 14:55
