So this was the front page news for the past few days... how do you feel about it, and how do you think this will affect Polish laws regarding controlled substances.

Tourism industry needs a boost? Or maybe they’ve got too little mental cases there for it’s a common knowledge that drugs bring up mental illnesses if they run in your DNA. And if they don’t, you can happily plant a seed my Czech fellow.

(I'm not stomping my foot and saying I'm right) Legalizing recreational drugs is a public health matter, and Poland couldn't handle it. Neither could the USA at present, because for every class of drug there are any number of specific considerations.

I think the U.K. knows what to do.

The World Health Care Organization stopped ranking countries for their health care efficacy several years ago "beacause of the complexity of the task." But in the old days I used to be surprised the UK was "only" ranked around 30 places higher than the US.

My point is that if I were a lawmaker I would do whatever the U.K. does, in any case (and present the ideas as my own, of course). :)Joj Y. edytował(a) ten post dnia 09.01.10 o godzinie 14:58

With the US, the problem runs really deep and it goes way beyond the usual issues like clinics and treatment. No matter where you go, there's poverty and with that come alternative sources of income. If drugs were to become legal, all those thousands of people who now make a living distributing controlled substances would have to turn to other crimes such as robbery, grand theft auto and others.

Not too long ago this exact scenario played out in Philadelphia, the newly appointed [at the time] Police commissioner succeeded in getting rid of a nice chunk of the drug scene, so in turn, people started stealing things like the AC units out of windows etc...

The drug culture is permanently interwoven into the American culture and at this time, decriminalization would cause some serious issues for millions. Still, at the same time you have the Reaganesque war on drugs which at this moment is costing the US $600 every second is obviously not working. According to the US dept. of Justice:

"Someone is arrested for violating a drug law every 17 seconds. Someone is arrested for violating a cannabis law every 38 seconds."

That's some scary stats right there.

On top of that, treating drug addicts like criminals is extremely counterproductive. Just imagine how many clinics could be created for just a fraction of the money that this so called war is costing the tax payers.

Drug addicts are not criminals, they are sick people who need treatment and not a prison sentence where they end up turning tricks for a fix and come out ruined for life.Rafal Wolk edytował(a) ten post dnia 09.01.10 o godzinie 20:24

Reaganesque war on drugs

I read it as 'Reggaenesque' and started blinking heavily, as it obviously didn't make sense... ;)

On a more serious note, a drug addict, besides being a sick person, can also be extremely dangerous, esp. when suffering from withdrawal symptoms - such people are on a sort of autopilot and won't think twice about killing or seriously harming someone for getting a fix. I know such a person can't fully control what they're doing, but I'd probably treat them as criminals - I'd certainly be scared of them. I'm talking about hard drugs, of course. I don't think that this precludes putting them into clinics rather than jails, but I'd make it non-negotiable, just like prison sentences are.

For countries such as Poland or Czech Rep... (we're talking cannabis, not just any drugs, right?) dunno, Holland is doing fine. The UK once decriminalised it but in 2009 they reclassified it from a C class drug back to B as a result of apparently reporting no positive effects of the previous decriminalisation. I don't know what to think - as Joj put it, they seem to know what they're doing...Sylwia Łubkowska edytował(a) ten post dnia 10.01.10 o godzinie 01:16

Cannabis, Mushrooms, Heroin, Cocaine, Ecstasy and LSD...

You can now grow up to five cannabis plants, thirty mushrooms, have up to 15 grams of pot on your person along with a gram of cocaine and other small quantities of above mentioned narcotics. You may also purchase controlled substances at coffee shops which opened up right away.

You are correct, decriminalization doesn't mean legalization but I think that's the end product that the Czek gov't is looking for.
I guess we'll see after a year or so, how things will pan out. I am actually curious if other neighboring countries would follow suite if it does work out, or if the EU will pressure the Czek gov't to set these laws back.
Cannabis alone, if taxed, could generate a tremendous amount of income for the EU.Rafal Wolk edytował(a) ten post dnia 10.01.10 o godzinie 11:56

Oh, right, so it really does include hard drugs, then. In that case God must have abandoned them. It simply goes beyond my comprehension how anyone could make possession of a gram of heroin legal. For dealers that would mean that as long as they only sell one gram at a time, they're fine (what a great career op for petty dealers starting as 'mrówki'!) Well done, Czech Republic.

Also, I'm for decriminalisation of cannabis (i.e. issuing a person possessing it with a reprimand of some sort rather than a fine or a sentence), but I'd never equal decriminalisation with endorsement. It might be fun going to a 'coffee shop' and enjoy a 'legal' skunk just for the heck of it once or twice but I'd be extremely annoyed if such coffee shops were a norm. I already find the shops trading in 'dopalacze' getting on my wick.

I'm not sure if decriminalization is better than legalization. The second allows for some control and maybe would at least slightly prevent contaminating of normal wee with some bad chemical stuff. The first may be just simply abused and turn out not really good.

On the other hand - maybe legalization but with severe punishment for those who abuse the law (and eg. sell drugs to kids) is a good way?

And for the record, drugs are bad, they're good only for hippies...
