Temat: Correcting others

I've just seen a GL profile with a mistake in Polish and am wondering if this person knows about it.

Would you write a PM to discuss it with the concerned person or should I forget it?

Do you correct others in (non-work, non-teaching) context?
Is it bad manners to tell someone about their mistakes?
I think it is but perhaps you have a different opinion.

*I work with texts A LOT, so double spaces, no paragraphs, wrongly used caps or missing comas drive me nuts in written texts, but GL is not my work field, so perhaps I should relax? ;)

What is it with double spaces? When I have proofread texts they have invariably had millions of double spaces. How do they get in there?

I think the person in question would probably prefer to have a profile free of mistakes so by informing him/ her would actually be doing this person a favour. Especially if you were to do it in a light-hearted or humerous way. It might even be an opportunity to make a new friend and who knows where that may lead...;)

--> no, I will not write a PM. Nobody is perfect :)

Do you correct others in (non-work, non-teaching) context?
--> not really. Except maybe when they are writing really stupid things.
Is it bad manners to tell someone about their mistakes?
--> In work-environment, it's not bad manners.
In non-work: it depends on the person. If you know the person very good, it's not a bad manner.
Personnaly, I have no problem if somebody will tell/write me if I made a mistake. I can always learn something :)

Not saying anything > anyone can do it.

Being corrected by someone you don't know > you should learn how to appreciate it.

Temat: Correcting others

thanks for your responses :)
I knew it, everyone's reaction is different

the thing with that particular mistake was that the owner of that profle appears as extremely arrogant and "know better than you idiots" so for me it was already satisfying to spot this thing

and definitely I'm not going to do anything about it ;)
although I'd write a PM normally, especially to someone who is an important person and whose image is important for me, too

Lidia, if this person doesn't have a chance to ruin your life, why don't you try and see how he/she reacts?

You always have the freedom of not giving any answers to his/her negative reply.

I don't sit and think in such cases. It can't hurt. How bad could it be at the end?

PS. I've just taken the risk of reading "I said thank you Ilter, now bugger off" from you, for instance... this is how we learn things, me thinks. If we want to learn something, that is.ilter K. edytował(a) ten post dnia 26.08.08 o godzinie 20:39

Thanks for the encouragement, Ilter, I'll pass

Reading your reactions is a learning experience, too and I think it is sufficient for the time being

When I stopped teaching many years ago, I promised myself not to be a teacher in private life, as some things get carried over, so I'm careful not to correct people when it's not a work relationship, perhaps I exaggerate a little here ;)

But it's very interesting to read other people's opinions.

Couple weeks ago I saw a mistake in group description, silly one, but a mistake. I wrote a PM. And guess what?? He was really gratefull for pointing the mistake. No annoyance, no complain. Only pure thankfulness:)

You might say, that I'm lucky one, couse I could've came across someone rude.

I take it into account.

Karolina, what you did was following your heart, a spontaneous decision ;)

Once you start thinking too much then it gets more confusing.

I'm purely thankful for your story then.

So, do you think it's better to just go for it, or to think things through?

Temat: Correcting others

Is is a question about using your intuition in decision making?

In general I think you should go for it, but if it's not a frequent activity, the risk of making a mistake is higher, and your image is less consistent.

Lidia,

I believe in such saying that: "What doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger" and it's the same with correcting others and being corrected by others.
We should accept our slips or mistakes magnified by other people. Then learn a very lesson, in order to avoid them in the future or won't let them to become errors.Łukasz Klejment edytował(a) ten post dnia 27.08.08 o godzinie 09:06

Perhaps the risk of reward is also greater? And what does your image matter? What would you be trying to portray in that image which may be damaged by achieving something?

Let's say, that You made mistake (gramatical, lexical, whatsoever) in Your profile/group description/ real life conversation/ CV etc. and didn't notice it. Wouldn' t You like to know, Lidia? If You know You can also rectify the mistake.
Anyway, I would like to know, specially If You do this via PM not in public.

So...stop thinking about it:)
And let us know, what did You finally do.

Ehm, Lidia, how should I put it... you've made a mistake in *missing comas! ;))

I correct people sometimes, but make sure it's in a kind of joking way, so that they aren't offended (I haven't offended you, Lidia, have I? ;)) And I usually only do it with people I know well.

Sometimes I do it, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I don't or hardly notice it, sometimes it's not worth it, sometimes correcting someone comes as an impulse (that's the worst thing!) and sometimes it's because the mistake sticks in my mind and correcting someone is the only thing for me to stop obsessing about it ;) Sometimes I just can't help it. Let alone that correcting others is part of my job.

But then, I make mistakes too, and probably more often that I'd like to believe. Sometimes I experience a kind of 'superego effect' of realising I'd made a mistake after some time passed from writing a post. Then I go back to it, and yep, there it is. And I always correct it - that's what editing function is for.

And I don't mind when someone corrects me.
