Sometimes we feel like sharing what we're going to do, what we've done - and what we haven't done, too. We have our hopes, dreams, frustrations, or simply need to vent. Here's the right place to do so - in other words, let your soul be your pilot (I've been exposed to a lot of Sting lately). Maybe it'll give people ideas on what to do?

I'll start by saying that I'm taking my son the the "Mama i ja" picnic in the park in Chorzów (those who have been there know it's a great place), and we're going to have fun; plus, I need to spoil him a little before he goes on vacation with his dad, who's likely to ruin a year's hard work teaching the kid to behave properly and tying him to the chair in the basement. I need that too, as hard week ahead.

Thank you, Tatiana for this entry. Could you please provide some pics as well? As a Warmia and Mazury dweller, I must say I have a rather distorted picture of places like Katowice, Chorzów, Stalowa Wola, etc. as being polluted industrial jungles - I'd really appreciate if someone helped me change this stereotype (as I believe this is but a stereotype). I don't have friends or family to go down to and visit, which doesn't help...

You've got me! ;) I'll post the pics on my Picasa page and give you links. I didn't manage to take a picture of a weird wicker sculpture today though...

A bit more on Katowice and Chorzów. You'd be surprised to find out the area isn't VERY dirty and gray, although I have to admit the years of neclect and the level of pollution it experienced have caused a lot of damage to the cities. When looking for a place to live in Katowice, I always considered Tysiąclecie as one of the most conveniently located places - close to the park, with good connections to the center. I lived there for seven years (with breaks) and enjoyed it immensely - a five minute walk would take yo to the WPKiW. The pictures you can see on my Picasa page were taken in the park, and in the rose park. The rose park is one of the most amazing places - not only because of the wicker sculpture (as some might know) but because when in full bloom (late May till late September), the air there smells like heaven. When the cable car (not closed) used to operate, one of the tracks would go directly over the park, knocking you off with the aroma. There is another park in Katowice, famous for its peaceful green fields, and the Dolina Trzech Stawów, where you can even find a camp site!
I'd like to be able to say the city center is green and lovely - but apart from a little square with a glass fountain on it, and a few trees and shrubs, it's still very "communist" with its concrete buildings - but things are changing. We have a river that is currently flowing under the ground, and I hope they finally decide to uncover it, as they've done near where my office is.
I am now living in a nice, quiet residential area (blocks, still), near the park too. It's lovely :)

Thanks, Tatiana. The pics of the Wosana Picnic look very bucolic;) I took the liberty to view some of your other pictures, I loved the Bukowina Tatrzańska. Sometimes I wish I lived a bit more central...
I've found a website with various views from Katowice & Chorzów, just out of curiosity and while I was a bit worried about the three lone skyscrapers sticking out a bit like sore thumbs, I must admit there is a fair share of greenery among the industrial estates. Besides, on a closer looks, the skyscrapers have funny shapes! ;)

There are two distinct shapes - the Corn Knobs near the park, and the Stars near my office. Apart from that, Katowice's got amazing architecture, warped by the 1950's concrete buildings though. I like the way the city opens towards the center if you go from where I live, but unfortunately the Rondo thing is nothing to appreciate (the fountain works wonders in the heat of the summer but the building on the other side is a sad example of money washed down the drain).
I'll get some more pictures from the park for you this weekend; on my Picasa page you'll find some taken at our zoo as well. I'll try to get more from the rose garden - every year they keep telling us it's to expensive to maintain, and every year it gets more and more beautiful. The aroma, as I mentioned before, is overwhelming, and it's an ideal place for a picnic.
If you go to the Katowice group on GL, you'll find a photo thread. I believe they might have good Nikiszowiec footage.

Are there any major Polish citie that don't have such buildings?
Wrocław has just managed to get rid of one, but they're going to replace it with several more. That at least is the plan, though many of them were drawn up in headier economic times (like 2007).

Katowice is not a bad place at all, especially if you visit the right people and as long as you don't stay at the Polonia hotel :) I know a place that serves magnificent breakfast though. Mine :)

I'm going to Chorzow tonight:)

And I like Katowice, so many friedly people there.
So many hours spent at the train station... Memories.

After my first visit there two years ago, I loved Katowice. It's a poor city, but the architecture - no matter how derelict - is consistent. And of course "Hipnoza" is the best jazz club on this planet, not to mention its copious servings of exquisite food!

There's the Cubus, the Diamond, so one can steer clear of the old hotels. Some decent boutiques (Versace, Versace Sport) with even more decent prices.

Someone keyed my Warsaw-registered coupe, though.

If you park it on the pavement I'll key it, whatever the registration plate.

And you'd be damn right! I respect private property, but parking on the pavement is nothing but boorish.

It was in front of "Longman", a friendly pub with a dark, sweaty, cramped, sexy hell of a dancefloor.

Still, it's nothing compared with Warsaw-Łódź hatred.

BTW There's a great car-keying scene in "2 Days in Paris" ;)Adam Lipiński edytował(a) ten post dnia 26.06.08 o godzinie 21:44

When younger, I used to go to Kotlina Klodzka a lot, Kudowa Zdroj, Czermna (kaplica czaszek), Wambierzyce, Bledne Skalki, Darnkow… those were by far my favorite places, tranquil, peaceful and completely desolate with miles and miles of practically abandoned paths through mountains. Szklarska Poremba was another one.
I’ve spent some time on a yacht in Mazury one summer, going from lake to lake through channels and camping out on small islands.. I remember one particular one… there were so many mosquitoes there, everyone would “park” their boat away from the shore to avoid them… in fact there were so many of them, you could hear them at night, almost like an airplane somewhere far. When we pulled up to the island in the morning for a dip in a lake and breakfast over a camp fire, we found an abandoned tent and a sign in English that read “Welcome to hell”. Sylwia, do you know where Klusy is? I spent an entire summer there with my Boy Scout team… good times… I am hoping to revisit all those places soon enough.

I love the Kudowa area, and even dared to drink that foul smelling water! Błędne Skały are simply amazing, even though not so desolate anymore.
My favorite place is Babia Góra, and I love hiking in the Beskid Śląski/Żywiecki as cannot climb higher mountains.
