I agree with (probably, maybe i missed something) every word you wrote in this thread. If I had read such books when i had been a kid, I probably wouldn't have been such intollerant, aggressive, sinister, arrogant cynic narrowminded boor :D j/k i'm not ;)

I guess wouldn't be too glad if the book was mandatory for kids, but i believe it's a good story to be read and explained to children by their parents/teachers. Hell, it's a better way to accustom kids with such stuff than any "adult" media which will be come across by any kid sooner or later.
Again, it's also an argument for developement of private schools - if say, i'm a parent who doesn't want his kid reading such stories - i'm sending my child to a school which declares that they haven't got such books in their library. Simple.
I think that important issue in such books is as you stated: that they stress not sexuality but just about lifestyle and sexual orientation. If none is bad, agressive or humilitating and different behaviors aren't "praised" but simply shown as possible, I think it's very convenient to kids.
It's bad to ban books, it's better to have a brain ;)
