To be pedantic, it happened in the 20th century, and I guess the original disappearance had long since been forgotten.
Are you refering to incompetent policing that resulted in her own family not being more closely scrutinised (I think today they would be), or that such bad people still exist?
As far as the latter is concerned I think there is no hope for improvement.
Hard to believe that the guy's wife knew nothing.

She disappeared in the 20th century, but was still being held captive in the present one.

Of course bad people still exist.

My main question would be how could such a thing be feasible without neighbours, families and schools and so on, getting to know about it.

I've got 3 daughters. If I chose to do something similar, how could I possibly get away with it undiscovered for so long?

I think that she was reported missing, but as long as the police didn't suspect the family and do searches of the property then I don't see how anyone else could know. There would be no visual clues. The sound of shouting for help would be the only indicator that someone was in the cellar. Perhaps he scared her so much that she didn't dare to make any noise.
Again, the fact that the guy's wife was unaware seems a bit dodgy.Steven H. edytował(a) ten post dnia 27.04.08 o godzinie 17:40

How on earth would I explain away the six extra children in my house to friends, neighbours and relatives?

Very much so.

What excuses would he have used to prevent her from entering the cellar of her own house?

And the sudden appearance of a large brood of children.

Bear in mind that this is the second case of that kind in Austria so far. Unbelievably S.I.C.K.

The story is so sick that it's hard to believe it. So many kids involved and nobody asking who they are and whose they are... Very queer.

Stories like that always remind me of "The Collector" by John Fowles.

Maybe she doesn't like spiders?

I just assumed they were all locked up downstairs....

More details are now emerging.

3 of the children had been locked up with their mother since birth and had never seen sunlight or received education.

The other three were (apparently) left in the house with a note from the mother saying she couldn't look after them.

The rest of the family must have known.

This must be the most bizarre case ever.

Remember there was also that 18 year old who'd been in an Austrian cellar for 12 years recently. And apparently another such case in Austria, making three.

Do they put something in the water there?

What puzzled me was that when the father/grandfather got three of the kids up from the cellar, he adopted tham, saying his daughter had run off to join a cult. And the social workers didn't make contact with her (even cult members are contactable).

And worse, according to the Austrian police, apparently the granny/stepmother didn't even know her daughter was down there. All that time and only a few yards away. Didn't she wonder about the electricity bill, or what her hubby was up to taking food for three people down? Not to mention the screams of 8 childbirths.

And wosre yet, they didn't live in a house in the woods, they lived in an apartment building.

If anyone on Anglosphere lives in Austria, I suggest checking the basement. Unless they've got someone down there.

I find it hard to believe it's physically possible to pull this off without some serious turning a blind-eye.

Here's a quote from one of the neighbours: “This is a shock to all of us,” a neighbour who gave her name only as Maria, 66, said. “I’m good friends with Mrs F Both she and her husband are lovely people. I’ve seen her take the children to school very often – they are well dressed, polite and very nice. I just saw her the other day and I still cannot believe that this was going on in front of our noses. We always believed that the mother of the children had run away and dumped them on the grandparents. Who would ever think of such a horrible thing?”

Well-dressed, polite and nice = lovely people... Err, it does if you're interested in social graces but the equation doesn't really add up in any logical way. You've got to ask yourself if saying "gute tag" and dressing in a tie constitutes a good human being and if it clearly doesn't, then the social goal posts need to be moved...

Or, the neighbours really weren't that fucking stupid and they knew what was going on but kept their mouths shut.... which is even worse, isn't it?

And here's what's bugging me the most: why would you want to imprison your 18 year old daughter and then rape her? And carry on doing it and father her kids? I just can't seem to see the attraction...Steve Jones edytował(a) ten post dnia 29.04.08 o godzinie 00:30

Often when death penalty comes up in conversations, people ask me why is it that I am so for life, yet I still agree with capital punishment.

I agree with capital punishment for 'sickos' like Ian Brady.

I'd say it was the kindest thing for everyone concerned.

And I would also regard it as being 'just'.

I had to look him up. Yea he gets my vote of confidence. I have a thing for kids (not just because I am a father) but there is something so sinister in child abuse that breaks certain boundaries. It crosses the line of innocence. Most kids remain mentally scared for life, some unable to cope for the rest of it. What really sucks is the fact that in most cases, child abusers get couple of years in prison then they are out. There is a site in US where you can track registered sex offenders and child abusers and see where they live. I actually checked it out at one point. Living in a nice diverse quite town, I was pretty shocked to find out that I was surrounded by them. Child abuse does not deserve second chance, not in my book. It is true that they get “mishandled” while locked up, yet for some reason that just doesn’t quite ring the justice bell for me.Rafal Wolk edytował(a) ten post dnia 29.04.08 o godzinie 14:10

I read all about it in Rzeczpospolita today. I can't believe his wife was tricked into believing the daughter had dropped the kids at the doorstep for them to bring up. What a load of bull!

Temat: Austrian man locks daughter in cellar for 24 years:

I just read about it today... and I just don't believe that his wife didn't know anything... How is that possible she didn't know for how many people she was cooking? She never noticed that her husband was buying new clothes for his prisoners?
I just don't understand... :/

If he was raping his own daughter I doubt that he good enough to take breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper down to them, plus morning and afternoon tea and biscuits. Maybe he just took food down two or three times per week. It seems like it was well equipped down there, with a bathroom and everything.
It still stretches the imagination though to imagine that he didn't get found out for 24 years.

The wife must have been damned frustrated with her missing daughter dropping those kids off to be looked after, three times.

In the face of such horror I'm speechless.

What are the odds that there will be a true story film based on this?
