Uhm, sometimes you are but I`m not sure if it`s your national characteristics. It takes you (I mean "Brits") a long time to accept "outsiders". Once you do, you stop being snobbish.

I know i just said you're the voice of reason, Violetta, but now you're not the voice of reason at all :-)
I'm much more accepting of outsiders than i am of other brits!

You may be an exception. Besides, why are you judging me? it`s just my opinion...

Would you be happy to tell us more about your experiences?

Definitely:)

I often meet friends of my British friends and they are always very nice but patronizing. Of course, Dave, they are accepting, meaning tolerant but they keep testing if I can be accepted in the same way their British friends are. Accepted, not tolerated as a foreigner. When/if I "pass the exam", they stop "palpating" me:)

In what context do you meet friends and friends of friends?

In what ways are they patronising?

How does this manifest itself?

Usually on social occasions.

In what ways are they patronising?

How does this manifest itself?

The first few questions/sentences are sometimes surprising, e.g. if I have ever been to any foreign country before, or (the worst comment I`ve ever heard though it was supposed to be a complimnt)that we look Europeans.

Similar situations have never happened on professional occasions, though!

ROTFL

I don't think you meet that many people as you described.

Presumably the person you were talking to had had little or no contact with foreigners or 'abroad' before.

It was an amazingly stupid comment.

But probably there are 'thick' people to be found in every country.

Or, on second thoughts, perhaps it was his idea of a joke.warren whitmore edytował(a) ten post dnia 03.07.08 o godzinie 19:27

You know what? When I read your last post and looked at your photo i began laughing! Thank you for that nice moment!:)

So many people here (in Britain) know absolutely nothing about Poland and until recently had never met a single person from that country. So surely it's more about their lack of worldly experience rather than about being patronising.
I've never met anyone from Bhutan - I've no idea what i might say to a Bhutanian if i met one - but it probably wouldnt be anything masterfully coherent.Dave Andrew edytował(a) ten post dnia 05.07.08 o godzinie 20:17

I have never met any Brits(I have only met with a few) that were snobbish or patronizing in any way, although it was always in a musical/party context, so that might have something to do with it. Perhaps it is just the accent that non-Brits find patronizing. Americans see the British as snobbish and 'prissy' but only as a severe stereotype. I would be interested to know why no one else commented on this..

Another discussion about stereotypes, which are always false, but, at the same time, contain a bit of truth ;)

There are snobs in every country, just check: http://www.goldenline.pl/grupa/first-class
