I came across it the other day; I used to love them a few years ago, and would often sit down with a friend and laugh to tears at those serious problems. Do you think they're, like, real?

Luckily,I have never had to ask any Agony Aunt for advice so far.
One of the lovliest questions addressed to an Agony Aunt I once came across read along the following lines:

'Tell me please which is better: to put a clean shirt on a dirty neck or a dirty shirt on a clean neck?'

Don't know what the Agony Aunt's answer to this was, but she must surely have felt quite embarrassed.:)

I have a feeling most of these problems don't come from real people, but are invented by the columnist.

Well, sometimes young girls ask them for advice, but in most cases they are, as you say, invented by the mysterious Agony Aunts. The job must be great fun for a journalist inventing such letters.
I remember my secondary school English teacher bringing us such letters from Cosmopolitan and then we were to offer our advice.
My friend and I were to help a man with a wooden leg who had sex problems - his wife refused to have sex with him every night. I bet if he followed our advice his wife would have ended up in some lunatic asylum.

You're intelligent enough to guess what two stupid young lads may have advised in this case; one of the options was something like cutting off his wife's limbs. The teacher gave us a good grade for English but said she was disgusted with the advice as such.

I can't believe these would be true:

My partner doesn't want commitment and we've split up. Should I just wait and bide my time until he makes up his mind or should I just get on with my life...

I think both are lame. The lady probably has a kind of Mother Teresa syndrome and the guy doesn't have the cojones to make up his mind.

From the male perspective, however, this is a fertile soil to cultivate a toxic relationship, i.e. have a monthly fcuk without further commitment.

People tend to cling to their hopes, but only as long as there is no better possibility around. As they said in Star Wars, "there is always a bigger fish." ;) A better prospective partner can quickly dispel the toxic residue.
