In Poland, 3 million children and adolescents suffer from health problems caused by poor nutrition and one third of Poles suffer from physical or psychological illnesses resulting from undernutrition, unbalanced nutrition or overeating.
Which is why, in 2002, Danone Poland decided to initiate the first nationwide study on the nutrition of four-year-old children, in partnership with two local scientific institutes. In the wake of this study, Danone organised the first national conference on malnutrition in Poland and enriched the local Danonino recipe (Danonki) in calcium and vitamin D.Since 2003, Danone Poland, through its "Share your meal" programme, has provided thousands of children with meals and developed new programmes to fight malnutrition.
In 2006, Danone Poland participated in a health partnership with Lubella, Polish leader in cereal products, Biedronka, Poland's leading hard discount retailer, and the Institute for Mothers and Children, for its medical expertise, to develop Mleczny Start, the first food product in Poland providing social benefits. Each partner agreed to slash margins to the minimum, making Mleczny Start—priced at around 15 eurocents per packet—affordable for even the most disadvantaged families.
