I couldn't watch it either. It's funny, but people do seem to have a thing for cruelty in general and zoosadism in particular. A few weeks ago there was an article in Polityka describing what apparently used to be a common practice and source of great entertainment a few centuries ago, i.e. 'cat burning', where cats were burned alive in bonfires to the immense delight of the spectators.I am at a loss to figure out why. Is this a kind of throwback from prehistoric times before we developed empathy? Or maybe inflicting pain on other creatures makes us feel more powerful? I guess this could be classified as deviation and a possible psychiatric case if only it weren't a culturally sanctioned 'norm'... or maybe the whole nation needs a shrink?

Western civilizations do things that far surpass eating live fish and on a much larger scale I might add.The problem arises, when we, on our western end watch a video of something that turns our stomachs due to the unusual [to us]; or as some may call it - backward way.
Yes, it's cruel, extremely, but if we compare it to what we do to the environment every second of every waking hour, or to the many wars that our tax money is financing, suddenly that twitching carp becomes just another dead fish on somebody's plate.
Would I eat that? Most likely not, but I also wouldn't participate in bull riding, whale hunting or hunting of any sort for that matter etc etc...
here.. brighten up... we can always go quail hunting.

Yeah, been there, done that. I have seen and tried "drunken shrimps", that fish being eaten alive and such stuff. Not that I fancy these too much but hey, horses for courses. And btw these touchy lines like "With its heart exposed and beating, gills still working, trying to gasp for air and those last few seconds of pain-filled consciousness, staring at you with its slowly dying eyes which ask you in a fainting tone... "Why... . why... wh... y... w," your fish is ready for eating" are rather comical than horrifying :)
EDIT - found this too "A spokesperson said: "Every decent person should be shocked when anyone mocks or abuses a helpless dying animal.". What's missing is "Captain Becks says 'Eating this is bad. Posh and I don't do it'". Plus page 3's "Jenny from Bolton reckons fish isn't treated well. Killing animals and eating them is a barbarian action anyway :)
These slant-eyed dudes are performing the action on the dining table, that's the only difference.
This reminded me of Bernd's "Muslim Food" thread...
Honestly, putting stupid ceremonies aside, for me there's no big difference between making the animal sleep with injections first, then butchering and butchering it without the injection.
Actually I could even argue that the latter method is less painful for the poor creature...
Sad but true... we're all barbarians.
Well, maybe except vegetarians...
