I got money off all my relatives. It came to a total of 30 quid. I spent it all on sweets on holiday.My godson is making his communion next year. I've already started dropping hints that he won't be getting the latest laptop on the market.

If my kids were going to have their first holy communion, I'd buy them some rosary beads to keep them on the path that the Good Lord intends.But, thankfully, they won't be having a holy communion.

Telescope. They're fun and interesting, and you don't have to spend too much for a starter (at least not here).Microscope. Same deal.
A carved wooden flute, little guitar, a kid's keyboard.

Or just write a nice letter for posterity. I would dig that myself if I were a kid, especially if my grown ups kept it safe for me for later years.

I would drive my kids as far away as I can from the church etc..maybe I wouldn't leave them any choice... but I didn't have one too... I was baptised and I have no bloody idea why...
anyway... I have been given a few nintendo games a watch, a calculator and a golden necklace with a lil' golden christ..
i have none of these anymore... and as if I try do relieve the very komunia moment... there was a nice dinner and I was really happy about the nintendo games..

Exactly! I don't think kids see it as sth profound, how can they when their parents worry all too much about the dresses, dinner, guests, presents? Do they talk to their kids how important a moment it is for a Catholic? Or is it?

"Komunie" have always looked like a small congregation of underage pimps and trollops. Boys tend to wear scaled down versions of 80s suits we saw in "Miami Vice", girls are looking like pedophiles' dream - nymphettes in pseudoregal gowns and most of them only waiting to whip out their newest PS3 or Hanna Montana's "'Lil slut from the Midwest" set.

I remember meeting all my favourite aunts and uncles I had never seen before or known they existed.I got a lot of money, which went straight to a savings account and was later to be used by my parents. And some beach towels which were totally en vogue at that star date.

thanks, Joy for your advice, but..he already has such a painting-kit or whatever you call it *sigh*. I'll probably give him some money, but you never know how much is enough or too little, and then the kid may get disappointed..Hopefully, my worries will prove far-fetched, for I love my nephew dearly and would never like to make him unhappy.

hmm I'll think about it ;) but seriously, my nephew can be pretty straightforward, like when we drove somewhere and he complained about my cinquecento being so old-fashioned, with no dvd player in it. Shame on me. He stopped, when I told him he could always go on foot ;) anyways, I'll have the same problem within two yrs - then my niece is going to have her 'komunia'.
