Explanation: The NASA engineers felt that the most important items for survival were oxygen, a map of the stars in the Moon’s sky, water and a radio receiver-transmitter. The Moon doesn’t have an atmosphere like Earth. Also there is no oxygen on the Moon, so in order to survive astronauts must have a continuous supply of oxygen. The next most important item is a constellation chart. In a survival situation, the crew needs to know in which direction to travel to reach the base. A map of the Moon’s sky will help them find their way.As there is no water on the Moon the crew would need water. The human body can survive for about 2 weeks without food by will only last a few days without water. The radio receiver-transmitter would allow the crew to contact the base when they got close. The base could then send out a rescue team.
The remaining items are less critical. Flares and rope are useful but not critical for survival. Food would not be critical as the crew would likely use up all its oxygen before needing food. The first-aid kit would be needed if someone was injured and the self-inflating raft could be used to carry an injured crew member across the Moon surface. The heater would only be necessary if the crew were lost on the cold, dark side of the moon. And the fire extinguisher could possibly be used to propel the crew across the surface faster- but isn’t essential for survival.
The least important items for survival are matches and the magnetic compass. Since the moon’s atmosphere has not oxygen the matches would be useless. Also the Moon doesn’t have a magnetic field like Earth does, so the compass would not work.
The helium tank and party balloons aren’t essential either. Some have suggested filling up the balloons and placing them in the shape of an arrow which points in the direction the crew has travelled. This signal could be left at the spacecraft to inform any rescue team that finds the empty spacecraft.
