Temat: Grammar or Fluency?

What do you think is more important? Do you think you need to know all 12 tenses and 4 conditionals, and the correct sentence structures, or are you happy if you can just communicate and say what yuo want, but with mistakes?

Fluency of course!!!
Are there really 12 tenses in English? What do you need all of them for?? Do you sell them? Or maybe there was a discount when they were divided tenses among different languages once upon a time?
I'm rally glad when I talk and people understand me, for me it's enough, although I know I make a lot of mistakes.
However... I'll have to pass my language exam on my doct. studies soon... and I'm afraid that grammar may occur crucial :-)

I'm the best example that fluency is more important that 12 tenses ;)

As long as you are able to actually communicate "what you want" while making mistakes....
This is the tricky part.
I think both are equally important, one can't work well without the other..Katarzyna Caffrey edytował(a) ten post dnia 16.06.08 o godzinie 11:17

I think Grammar is actually very important, but not in the early stages of learning. From my own experience; I picked up communicative skills first which in turn helped me greatly with grasping at other “straws”. It helps you with asking the right questions. While having a monologue, trying to put together a sentence with a proper structure and understandable message, at first students should worry more about the pronunciation in order to get the basics across, once that becomes automatic, you can start working on your “form”, grammar, sentence structure and connecting thoughts in a coherent manner.
Spoken word is much harder to get across since you don’t physically see it, it must be clear and understood by the receiver otherwise it’s absolutely useless. “Tarzan tired, must sleep” - you know exactly what’s happening here, take away the text and depending on what part of the world Tarzan is from, it may not be so clear.

Learning basic grammar is also important in the early stages, but for other reasons than just grammar’s sake. It does give you a bit of a wider angle on what is to come.

However, all this could be absolute rubbish for I am in no way certified to teach any languages … not even to your cat.Rafal Wolk edytował(a) ten post dnia 16.06.08 o godzinie 17:53

Well, more often than not, simply trying to communicate in the language of the receiver, not necessarily fluently or correctly is already a great sign of respect.

Good point. When I came to Poland in the late '90's, I tried to put a coin into one of those Żeton-phones, and a Pole came up to me, and thought really hard before pointing and saying "No. Money."
I was really impressed by the fact that he spoke to me despite his poor English, and for him the most important thing was communication.

Bearing in mind that about 80% of communication is non-verbal, grammar shouldn't really be the major key to communicate effectively, but it certainly helps to be familiar with it:)

I think gramma isn't so important but many people affraid to speak English in foregin
countries becouse they don't feel well in gramma even if they speak fluenty.

My advice: "Speak not think. Don't be affraid. English is realy good fun".

I think anything could be fun, when it comes to learning languages (In my opinion) the more relaxed the atmosphere and the more natural the actual learning process is... the easier it is to pick it up. I may be talking smack however.
