Process description

Two or more layers of dissimilar material are homogeneously bonded together in a vacuum chamber, with the aid of explosives.
The bonding process is illustrated in the animation. The cladlayer is originally positioned parallel to but at a slight distance (stand off) above the base material. The clad assembly is located in the vacuum chamber. On top of the cladlayer, powder explosives are loaded and the detonator is placed. After closing the vacuum chamber and evacuating air, the detonator is initiated from the control room.
The enormous amount of energy results in a collision on the interface and due to the high pressure, metallic bonding occurs.
The bonding strength is stronger than the weakest material!
