The Hydristor technology, invented by Thomas Kasmer, is an infinitely variable vane hydraulic pump/motor -- basically a simplified automatic transmission with no gears, with regenerative storage capability.

The name "Hydristore" is a blend of the words "hydraulic" and "storage", as hydraulics are used to store vehicular energy that is usually lost.
The company seeks to present a means to convert all existing non-hybrid vehicles into a highly-efficient hydraulic hybrids, doubling or tripling the mileage and drastically cutting emissions (to 1/4). The retrofit will also increase the performance of the vehicle, enabling any car to go from 0 to 60 in three seconds, just from the stored energy from stopping.

With all mechanisms in place, Kasmer expects that the fuel-to-motion efficiency will be as high as 80%, compared to the low 30% range of present. The engine will last twice as long, because it can operate in its optimal range, and it doesn't have to work as hard. Brake wear will be negligible.

The Hydristor has been called 'the holy grail of transmissions' in the auto industry.
