Energy-absorbing steering columns are safety systems designed to help reducing driver injury

'The safety system is designed to help reduce driver injury and uses information from the vehicle's crash safety computers (for example, crash severity, safety belt usage and driver seat position) to determine whether to activate a pyrotechnic device that customizes the load level at which the steering column will stroke.

"This steering column automatically adapts within milliseconds of a frontal collision and takes account of a number of variables in a crash," said Dan Crishon, business line executive, steering columns, Delphi Steering. "The variables can include the weight of the driver, whether she or he is wearing a seat belt, the vehicle's speed and the severity of the crash."'
