Making the news

In an era of rolling news bulletins and increased competition for readers and listeners, what constitutes news? On this workshop the key concepts of news gathering, news values and news agenda are explored in detail. The presenter, using examples from the print and electronic media, will demonstrate the links between real-time events and their re-telling or re-presentation as news, and place claims for objectivity and truthfulness under the spotlight.

Aimed at PR professionals who wish to enrich their understanding of the news making process and use it to their advantage in an informed and ethical manner, this course:

• Discusses the dynamics of news production within the context of currently accepted industry practices
• Tells you what’s newsworthy and why
• Shows you how to develop and harness your news-making potential on behalf of clients or employers
• Demonstrates why taking the lead when it comes to the media is the fastest and most effective way to secure your share of voice.

An entertaining and informative range of case studies will be used to illustrate the key concepts outlined.
