Poland "well independent" in terms of gas supplies - PM

Poland is "well independent" in terms of natural gas supplies thanks to its diversification efforts, PM Donald Tusk said on Tuesday during a press conference.

"Diversification of natural gas supplies allows us to say today that Poland is currently well independent as far as gas supplies are concerned," Tusk said. "We can not only effectively renegotiate the prices of Russian gas but also make it through the next winter in terms of gas supplies irrespective of what plans our neighbor will have."

One of the main elements of Poland's diversification efforts is the construction of LNG terminal in Swinoujscie, on the Baltic coast, which should start working at the beginning of 2015, the PM said.

"Works are progressing according to the provisions of the contract," Tusk said. "By the end of the year the gas terminal will be ready to undergo technical tests, so that at the beginning of next year the gas from Qatar can reach us."

The terminal is to allow Poland to import up to 5 bcm of gas a year, but the capacity could potentially be increased to 7.5 bcm.
