When I was at the military (Luftwaffe) we went on a day excursion to see an US-American spy post which was standing there, big bulbed headed white mushrooms on hill top, since the cold war.
Just some time after, me already effortlessly studying German, newspapers had the biggest spy scandal in the history of Germany.

What happened? Supposedly the USA didn't bother much after the cold war ended, to shut down the facilities but to use them to do some economical spying on their friends (eg Germany). Someone eventually found out though. ;)

My favourite spy story though is the one about the Siemens employee who stole nuclear material from an atomic plant run by Siemens in Bavaria. He smuggled the stuff out in his underpants, stored it in his bedroom closet, was cought, admitted to have smuggled it out to sell it on the black market to whomever, ended up with prostate cancer and shit!
Germans! ;)

I think I can vaguely remember that. :)
