Do/would you google the names of others on GL to find out more about them?

Is there anything wrong in doing this?

How do you feel about others googling your name to see what they can find out about you?

Temat: 'Spying' and the internet:

That's a good question! I havent googled anyone on GL yet (what a good idea) but I have done similar things. And felt slightly unesay about it for several seconds.
But it's going on all the time. Apparently employers check people out on facebook before deciding who to shortlist for jobs.

Of course..;)

Sure I would, especially the hotties (back me up here Keith!)!!!

I 'check' all new people inviting me to their contacts. I don't google their names, I use the links (if any) they provide in their profiles.

Besides, as I have stated on several occassions (Warren thinks it in the same way) any information published on the Internet automatically becomes a public domain. So, in my sick lil' mind, googling people's names doesn't equal 'spying' in my book.

Similarly I wouldn't call googling, say, Robert Kubica's name, spying.

Googling 'Robert Kubica moons accidental beach goers' would fit the definition of spying a little better.

Very seldom, but I do (and would).
I think the last one was about a musician from one of those GL groups.
Is there anything wrong in doing this?
It is an information open to public, there's nothing wrong with it.
Actually people should be happy that the things they do can appear in a Google search. Not everyone is that lucky :)
How do you feel about others googling your name to see what they can find out about you?
I don't mind at all.
Sometimes it is good, because it makes them sure who are they talking to when they send me e-mails.

Never. I once googled my own name, for some thread purposes. I wouldn't even do it if I was to meet someone IRL.
Following the links people publish on their profiles is a different thing I guess.

Yes. Why? Because I like to know things ;) And seriously I do it mainly after I find someone captivating and possibly sharing similar interests to have even more topics to discuss.
Is there anything wrong in doing this?

I don't think so - if I find out that someone is into e.g. nazi SM or Backstreet Boys, well then that's their problem they didn't take sufficient care to conceal their net presence :)
How do you feel about others googling your name to see what they can find out about you?

I have absolutely no problems with it.Marcin B. edytował(a) ten post dnia 10.07.08 o godzinie 11:24

I did it once to know more about a good friend.

Is there anything wrong in doing this?
Internet is public ... so I don't see the point

How do you feel about others googling your name to see what they can find out about you?
Of course not. See answer 2

Errr isn't this a contradiction?

Are you saying that you get to learn more about "good friends" from the Internet than from the actual "real life" interactions?

I wouldn't call them good friends then. Unless they became good friends after you did the research.Jarek A. edytował(a) ten post dnia 10.07.08 o godzinie 11:58

you're right :) It's first looking if there is some additional information

... be careful when you are looking for somebody by typing only his/her name ... there are people with the same name !!
Example: my name is not unique on internet

Temat: 'Spying' and the internet:

few people seem interesting enough for me to do any extra research on them in Google, checking their GL profile is quite telling sometimes + the interaction

but I'd check as much as I can before meeting a virtual somebody IRL

I think the things we wouldn't like others to know about are done under nicks and it's hard to trace it. Here we use our real names (at least we're supposed so), so it's not a big deal.

I personally think internet spying is a bit like whacking off: everybody does it (I mean 99% do it and the remaining 1% claiming they don't are probably lying ;))

This doesn't necessarily mean I wouldn't believe anyone who expressly says googling people up doesn't agree with them, but as far as I remember, pretty much everyone who I casually asked if they do it, they said yes. I do - perhaps on an impulse rather than regular basis but sometimes curiosity gets the better of me.

And I know people google me, which doesn't really bother me too much. I've read articles about googling up being part of recruiting process, which if became a common practice, would indeed feel a bit scary. I mean I've revealed certain sensitive information about myself which might potentially be misused, but I think (or choose to believe) the chances for this are rather slim. I wouldn't post a picture of me being drunk but otherwise just don't think about it.

These things are done after hours in the realms of our privacy and aren't easily traced back. As Jarek said in the other thread, you wouldn't normally know if someone googled you so unless you've posted something embarrassing about yourself, it's no point worrying.

The problem begins when it's someone else who caught you in an embarrassing situation and posted it on the Internet without your knowledge - like pics taken and films made with mobile phone cameras, which has plagued schools everywhere. I think this needs stopping but quite honestly I don't know how.
