Temat: Pick 3 cities out of 10 and win a trip around the world!

I've got a little quiz for you. I'm going to name 10 European Capital cities and I'd like to invite you to name the 3 ones you're either most likely to visit yourself (assuming you haven't been to them) or recommend a tourist visit:

1. London
2. Paris
3. Rome
4. Dublin
5. Madrid
6. Lisbon
7. Sofia
8. Bucharest
9. Helsinki
10. Warsaw

So, it's either 3 you haven't been to or 3 you'd recommend a tourist visit, or a mixture of the two.

Winners receive a trip around the world!

Because I've never been, then again, I've never been to a lot of places, so this would have been a good starting point.Rafal Wolk edytował(a) ten post dnia 25.03.08 o godzinie 12:26

Oh, and I should have asked you to give a short reason why.... ;)

5. Madrid
Three things: Santiago Bernabeu, the Retiro Park, and Alcala de Henares. Also, it's a great place for trying Spanish food, and walking down the streets the kings used to walk (or be carried on). One of the nicest airports too ;) What I really like about Madrid is that no matter what time it is, the city is bustling with people and you can get a glass of beer or a cup of coffee and tapas all night long.
One more thing: the old Atocha RENFE Station that has been converted into a tropical garden!
7. Sofia
If you haven't been there, you have to go. I say Bulgaria is one of the fastest developing countries in Europe; yet the people still have the real Balkan "manana" approach to life. There is one thing you just have to see in Sophia is the Synagogue. There's a great mountain called Vitosha (like the wine) nearby which is perfect for hiking/skiing. If you want to discover more, take a trip to the seaside, by car, stopping in the villages for a meal of cevapcici and shopsky salad.

9. Helsinki
I've never been there but heard it's lovely. Might go check it out. Anyone wants to join? :D

Defintely! IMHO it's the most relaxing and exciting place in the city. Being surrounded by palms and orange trees and breathing moist, tropical air, it's hard to believe it was the scene of the massive terrorist attack in 2003...

I couldn't agree more! A growing Eastern European tiger with impressive Byzantine heritage and a "delicate touch" of the communist past that hasn't spoiled the city too much, fortunately. Besides the synagogue, Orthodox churches and the mosque are also worth seeing...

And people - they're so relaxed, good-hearted and hospitable. As most of the middle-aged and elderly population does't speak English, I had to communicate in Polish and they thought I was... Serbian :)Magda B. edytował(a) ten post dnia 21.03.08 o godzinie 08:53

Very true. Now, when you board a train at the Atocha (old or new) you have to go through a luggage check.
Too bad the garden is closed at night - last time in Madrid I stayed in a hotel nearby, and on the way back from a flamenco show and tapas, took the subway to Atocha to see what it's like at night. Well, it's sort of asleep :)

London
It's such a great place for everyone and you can find there nearly everything you like plus it's multinational. I love the museums in London and shops in Oxford street, the City is so elegant! And I could spend months in the British Museum.
Rome
I love it how the modern city has developed around and on the ruins of ancient Rome and I love the artistic intelligence of the Romans. Another important thing is the Holy See. I love this place!
Lisbon
Located on the hills the city beautifully composes with the view of the ocean and your mind immediately sets on dreaming... especially when you sightsee it listening to the music of Madredeus.Lisboa, Lisboa! Fantastic experience!

Perhaps due to be a captain
I've been philologicly molesting for a very long time already by the Sir Admiral Jones of Tricity! ;)))

Coming to the subject:

1.2. L o n d o n & P a r i s
Two parallel 'capitals' of the modern world (at least of Europe)
London as an economical one, while Paris as the socio-cultural...
A numerous things to be seen there...
And let me spare you more words than that...

3. R o m e - Hey, The Capital (Capitol :) of the ancient world, the place of birth of our Latin civilisation...
Italy has a special charm, Rome esp...
The great atmosphere of St.Peter Square... during an event even unforgetable!!!
The small side street near Pza Venezia with a charmful italian like restraunt, where you can be treated a bit rude (included in service?). In Ital-ic: "Parli Inglese? Sei un turisto cretino!" :) Despite of that still worthy to be recommended.
+ Hospitality of the Italian people, whereabout they are very happy with one's hopeless attempts to abandon one's Continental English in favour to speak their language (la bellissima lingua Italiana, que mi piacce un'molto moltissimo :))), being so charming......and lbnl = I like the type of beautyness of Italian lasses (ragazze Italiane ) as well :)

10. Warszawa

Capital of the 'New Europe' (sounds f u n n y, as we are not any NEW Europe in fact)
Wanted to see a town of 2mln people
and completly reborne after being completly demolished during the last WW2?

Wanted to see a place
where the huge forces were being formed
-to conquer Russia (1610, 1812)
-to stop the non-European invadors (1240s, 1683)
-or to rebuff the wariors of an international revolution (1920)?

Wanted to touch the Centre of Europe?

Ever been to a capital city with only one underground line?
(Be hurry - quite soon it will be the 2nd one, and you will miss the opportunity!!!)

Ever seen a city with boroughs consist of achitecture of so many
styles?
Modern "Stonhenge-CITY" around Palace of Culture
Socrealistic Marszałkowska Living Borough (MDM) with Plac Konstytucji, garden-towns in the surrounding rings and suburbs, 19th century Prag(a),
17th Century reborn Old City,
18th century New City - like teleportated from some county town of eastern Poland...

Interested? Is in the heart of Europe - just a click away!

2. Paris

Visited
That big tall thingy designed by Eiffel (nice views from there). Louvre (which I missed when I in Paris last time). Plus I think Paris translates into "visit me", so it's hard to resist. But beware of grumpy French people, they're a bit sick of tourists. For nice French people, see countryside.
3. Rome

Visited
I just love the history of the Roman Empire, so seeing all the buildings, plus Vatican is rather awesome. St. Peter's "barn" is just bloody huge. And not too far away is sacred Monte Cassino, where Polish blood run freely during WWII.
5. Madrid

Would like to visit
I think Madrid would be a great place to visit. Bernabeu would be a prime target and enjoying a cold Sangria wine is also a must.Tomek P. edytował(a) ten post dnia 29.03.08 o godzinie 12:28

CHoose a Manzanilla! (golden sherry) - Sangria is good to drink in the South/Andalucia, but if you go to Madrid, you must try un vino de Jerez (sherry).
