Everyone can do an American accent... at least everyone thinks they can. But how many would pass muster with a Hollywood studio? The BBC's Stephen Robb took a lesson from one of the movie industry's top accent coaches.

There are many American dialects as well, depending on where you may find yourself on the map. I think the most popular are the west coast Cali flavor and the east coast New York accent (which in itself is also a collection of various dialects out of which two most dominant ones would be - Brooklyn and Long Island)

Nope... as of right now I have a NYC /NJ accent.

I don't see anyone of them being worst or best, some may be harder to understand (ie. Jamaican)

I can not stand the southern American and Boston ... urgh...

It's not important, but it does play an important role in some social as well as professional situations.

No, although I am a bit embarrassed by the fact that I have lost some flexibility in Polish.

How do foreigners sound to you when they speak
your language?

Just like I did while learning English. I think what matters most is that there is an effort being put forth.

How difficult is it to speak with the 'correct'
accent?

I don't think that there is a "correct" accent, but to learn an American or British accent is a pretty tough job.

What's the worst imitation of an accent you've
heard in a movie?

Leonardo DiCaprio in "Blood Diamonds"

Is it wrong to critise the accent of others?

Yes, it's stupid, but it does happen quite often.

Man, Raf! Except for the lost flexibility in Polish and speaking with a NYC/NJ accent my answers would be exactly identical. Especially the Leo DiCaprio bit! lol!

Well, I would also like to improve my 'fake' N.American accent (it's a mix of many US/CA accents) and would like to learn other accents (Scottish in particular). Just for the sheer fun of it.

I hate most foreign accents, especially Japanese. As for "English" English, I'm not a big fan of Australian.

As for best... Southern in the US. Scottish accent. I've never been exposed to the variety of British accents, so have no opinion, except one, strongly biased.

Is accent important?

It largely depends on what your using English for.

Are you ashamed of your accent in English or any other language?

Well, my German's terrible because of its awful "r", and I believe my Spanish isn't very good either, but it might be because I learned it from Mexicans.
I wish I could get the hang of the Polish "r" and lose the nasal quality of my voice though.

How do foreigners sound to you when they speak your language?
Again - depends. Most often, as long as it's comprehensible, I don't pay too much attention to accents.
How difficult is it to speak with the 'correct' accent?

If you have an ear for music and have practiced at least a bit - not very. I believe if I manage to speak with an accent different than "Polish" most of the time, anyone can do it.
Is it wrong to critise the accent of others?

No. As long as you do it in order to help them.

Jamaican English accent is awesome!! Indian accent can sound very condescending.

It is important that you can be understood, that's all.

I speak with a pretty bland English accent. When I'm angry, I sound very 'Brooklyn guinea'. I am absolutely terrible at attempting French words or phrases. That can be embarrasing as I have a few close friends who are French.
How do foreigners sound to you when they speak your language?
I've stopped noticing. On any given day, I can hear four or five different languages on the street. This is America - an accent is simply a conversation starter.
What's the worst imitation of an accent you've heard in a movie?
Kevin Costner in Hamlet - ick.

Is it wrong to critise the accent of others?
Yes, but films are free game.
