Temat: Have you spotted the trigger in yourself?

We all have some style and bag of preferences when it comes to music (except the ones like me).

But sometimes, it occurs to ourselves and we realize we like something really out of nowhere, out of our league.
Like a headbanger likes a song from Britney Spears (ie: ME!), or a commercial pop follower listens to Ella Fitzgerald time to time (ie: ME!)

I'm pretty hopeless, I know, but only thing I'm good at is, spotting the formulas about music. I know why I like this, and I know why I like that. I can go even deeper and list the reasons why.

Do you know why you like what you like? And most importantly... can you list some of the reasons?

It is hard for me to analyse this because I am just a simple music consumer. I guess you have to know some theory of music to identify the reasons that make you like or not like specuic kinds of music or individual tunes.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough...

It could be just:
"I like uptempo songs with a Jazz flavor", or
"I like black female singers (or sound-alikes), singing pop"

I know what you mean, Ilter.

I always thought of the reasons why don't I just go with the flow and adore Britney Spears, for example.

I tell you why.

1 - It just popped into my head that the first reason is my Parents.

MTV came to Poland in the early 90s (or maybe was it late 80s?) and they played the best songs at that time on MTV like Michael Jackson, Depeche Mode, Pearl Jam, etc. I think you know which period in MTV's life as a music television I'm talking about - the less commercial one.

And so, at the age of 5/6 I was able to tell the difference between Enjoy the silence and Show must go on.

And due to my Dad's obsession with Pink Floyd I can give names of each of their albums..

Same goes with Queen. My Mamma adores Freddie so when we bought the Made in Heaven CD I cried like a baby while listening to it and reading the lyrics..

Then I went to my piano school and somehow the time of MTV was over for me for that period of time (I've started to watch Cartoon Network in its original version instead - yes, that's partially the reason I speak English at all ;-P).

AT the age of 13/14 I bought my first two TAPES - and to my surprise today, I still like to listen to the things I bought back then.
One is Justyna Steczkowska, Dziewczyna Szamana. One of my favs on this album:

I think my musical education has a huge impact on what I listen to because I always look for "life" instruments and, in most of the cases, do not accept any computer influence.. (so, now you know Rafał why do I claim your music SUCKS - it's just not my thing..) UNLESS its a singing virtuoso like Bjork of Pj Harvey (although the latter does play on various instruments..).

Aah, all right then :)

I like Indie rock for its guitars.
I like lounge music for its relaxing effects.
I like black female singers singing jazz because they move me.
I like tunes that slowly build tension (any type of music).

Do you know why you like what you like? And most importantly... can you list some of the reasons?
I like rhythms that make me feel:

- inspired
- chilled/relaxed
- exhilarated
- like dancing
...good, in one word :)

And it so happens that most R&B and soul (MOBO in general), or acid jazz artists perform songs that make me feel all the above:)

my triggers:

slow tempo (40 - 60 bpms)

female blues singers with a low, deep voice

anything remotely resembling a tom tom

and - I don't know what you would call this.. sort of a double beat..like a hard straight beat with an echo that collapses in on itself.

No wonder. Most of us are influenced with what we listened to in those teenage years.
I also can say my biggest influences are the ones that I've known since those 'age's.
... I think my musical education has a huge impact on what I listen to because I always look for "life" instruments and, in most of the cases, do not accept any computer influence..
It must be your personal preference, because I know many people who are actually 'traditional' musicians with their favorite instrument, but still using a lot of synthetic sounds, sampling and digital audio editing during the creation process.

I wondered what do you think about the album "Bad" from Michael Jackson, in this sense. If not 70%, at least the half of it was produced with a lot of synthetic sounds and samplers*.

this is one of my absolute favourites when I am driving:

Sam Sparro - Black and Gold

I love everything about this song.... the beat, the voice of Sam Sparro, his intonation, tempo, lyrics... The volume is alway at the upper end when the song is on while I'm driving :D The tune illustrates pretty well what my temperament is like and how I'd prefer to drive my four wheels if there weren't any traffic restrictions! ;)

edit.: another song of this kind that I just love listening to when I'm driving or exercising is:
