'Venezuela and Portugal Sign 19 Agreements, May 30, 2010
Venezuela and Portugal signed on Saturday a set of 19 cooperation agreements on housing, telecommunications, electrical energy, oil, food, health and commerce, during the visit of Portugals Prime Minister, José Sócrates.
After signing the agreements in the Presidential Palace of Miraflores, President Hugo Chávez expressed his joy at receiving Prime Minister Socrates and highlighted the his political will to build solid relations, based on respect.
“Under your administration, Portugal has been building a clear and autonomous path regarding the foreign policy, which allowed this rapprochement. In the last years, we have been able to design the relation map that our peoples need. It was unthinkable that we do not have any political or commercial relation with Portugal. We can even say that there was zero relation,” he said.
In this regard, he stated that the venezuelan people “will appreciate and perceive the positive impact of these agreements.”
President Chávez mentioned the integration mechanisms that eventually benefit the strongest organizations such as the Andean Community of Nations, which Venezuela draw off from in 2006.
He pointed out that it is necessary to recognize the asymmetries and weaknesses in the integration mechanisms of every member country. “We are looking for the fair exchange, the fair commerce and make it easier to the weakest.”
