MEDICINES

Try to take antibiotics, flu and cold medicine, antihistamines, antipiréticos, eye drops, complete vitamins, aspirin, skin cream, prescription glasses, bandages, antiseptic tape, and such. Think about that human beings have the same diseases all around the world, but the problem is that in their pharmacies and hospitals they don't have anything. General advice:

For each person, you can bring into the country, without customs problems, 10 kg (22 pounds) of medicines, aside from the rest of the luggage.

You can get medicines from your friends and relatives. Or request them from pharmacies for free, letting them know that the destination is also a pharmacy. (There are many phamacists that feel a solidarity.) You can go to non-governmental organizations (NGOs). In this respect Caritas works very well. And especially the NGO Puente Familiar con CUBA C / Pedro Medrano, 3 28029 Madrid (Por la Plaza Castilla) - Tel: 913154365 - Fax: 609 162758 - President: Rigoberto Carceller. - This association is dedicated to taking things to Cuba using tourists' luggage. Whoever wants to send something to

Cuba can get in touch with them and give them the material. Then they'll deliver it where they know a need or using the addresses of needy people which have been given to the NGO. They also help the Cubans that are in Spain.

We advise you to remove from the medicines everything that adds weight and is not necessary.

Is someone making a delivery to Cuba? You can go to the Centro Sanitario and they will give you a document with your name recognizing your gesture, but we don't advise this system because chances are that those medicines are destined for people who don't need them so much but that are staunch supporters of the regime, or simply for the tourists.

You must take much care in handing them over to an individual because someone could be engaged in selling them to the highest bidder, but if the person is trustworthy, it is the best system. In this case it is very advisable that you classify the medicines before to accelerate the time of delivery to the needy ones by that Cuban, because you must consider that if the police or representatives of the party find medicines in their house, they automatically are accused of selling medicines illegally.

Another system that offers a great guarantee is to give it to the Christian Church.

CLOTHES

How many times have we thrown out our new clothes simply because we are tired of them or they are out of style? Don't throw them out, with them you can make a Cuban happy. I know children who have to walk barefoot. Send footwear, underclothes, trousers, jackets, baby clothes... really, everything that you can. Suffice it to say that it is a tropical country and that winter clothes will not be used for anything

ARTICLES OF FIRST NECESSITY

They can seem trivial but some very useful things are sanitary napkins, soap and condoms.

TREATS

If you want to bring happiness to a Cuban, send wine, caramels, chocolates, makeup, cologne, a radio, a Walkman, Ducados, etc.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Pencils, ball-point pens, rulers, dictionaries... but most of all paper. Nowhere in Cuba is it easy to find and they can make use of any donation to write.

FINAL ADVICE

Pride is free even in Cuba (How rare!) and the Cuban is very proud, prefering to die of a disease before accepting medicines from some saintly do-gooder. Understand?
