Temat: Ethiopia: Tourists number doubles
http://www.africanews.com/site/list_messages/16741The number of tourists that visited the country during the past three years was around 170,000, which shows a 50% increase during the year 2007”, the ministry indicates.
In 2006, travel and tourism in Ethiopia accounted for only 5.5% of the country’s GDP
“The government is proving its commitment and willingness to develop tourism through a number of initiatives.
Tourism is a featured component of Ethiopia’s Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) that aims to combat poverty and encourage development in the country,” the ministry said in its report.
Though Ethiopia increasingly has done a lot to develop its promising tourism sector but compared to its large but still hidden treasures a lot remains to be done, says Kebede Amare , tourism bureau head of Tigray region.
“Ethiopia has several challenges to overcome in expanding travel and tourism, the most important of which is the country’s negative public image and international perception. As such, the prospects for growth in travel and tourism remain very limited” kebede said.
Ethiopia made some significant gains in tourism revenue in 2007, making $176 million, according to the report.
“This is the first time that the country has obtained such “huge” money from its tourism sector, which is still low compared to the country’s tourist attractions and historical sites”, the official added
Ethiopia has a proud and long history extending to the known beginnings of humankind.
“The Axumite Kingdom was one of the great civilizations of the ancient world and has left behind the mystery of the great Stella found at Axum. In the late Middle Ages, great religious civilizations flourished in many parts of the country, particularly at Lalibela where churches hewn out of massive monolithic rock testify not only to great faith but also to great architectural skills,” the report added.
The large number of incredible rock hewn churches and Gondar castles among other tourist attraction sites are the places that attracted many tourists to the country. Al Negashi, the first mosque in Africa is also attracting many tourists to Ethiopia.
