UK Whistle Newsletter - November

Our annual Advice Line survey helps us understand how we are doing, but it cannot capture the outcome of the 2,000 plus calls we receive each year. We simply don't have the resources to follow up on every call to check if there has been a positive outcome. Understandably, people don't often call us back to update on their situation following our advice, and some call us anonymously. But when we do hear back from people we have helped, it serves as an invaluable reminder of the importance of the service we provide. Below is some recently received anonymised correspondence, which confirms that our advice work is valued and makes a real difference.

"I am writing to convey my sincere thanks and appreciation for the exceptional support I have received from PCaW as well as the extra time and care that you (former Chief Executive Cathy James) have taken throughout the worst year of my working life.

Though I will never regret whistleblowing, the effects of the aftermath were intense, including the emotional trauma and experience of isolation, which was not helped by ineffective union support. It was immensely reassuring to find that there was an organisation with experience, knowledge and intelligence who understood my situation and had my best interests at heart. I feel sure that without your support and guidance, I would not have had the strength to keep standing for the past twelve months. You are fantastic people providing a first class service to the people. Thank you for everything."

In other news, we spoke out against the British Medical Association's legal guidance on whistleblowing for junior doctors (see PCaW in the News, below) and welcomed the news that the Work and Pensions Committee and the Business Select Committee have proposed a draft bill affecting gig economy workers, who would assume the status of "worker by default" and be entitled to holiday and sick pay.
