Are You a Whistleblower or a Snitch?

A leaker or whistleblower, in any circumstances, adopts a very precarious moral stance. By taking private information public, she violates the trust given to her as an insider. That it is only by virtue of her trusted position that she is able to do harm makes the harm all the more troubling. There is also something unavoidably arrogant about the act—the leaker or whistleblower does not merely refuse to comply, but takes on a position of judgment. The term “whistleblower” itself gives us a good image in which to see this: it is as if a football player on the field not only does not follow directions, but takes the position of the umpire, calling foul against his own team.

The recent admission by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden that he leaked information on the NSA’s surveillance programs has put the spotlight on leaks and whistleblowing. Former Vice President Dick Cheney called Snowden a traitor. Others called his actions praiseworthy.

Niedawno, w trakcie szkolenia o Near Miss Reportingu zapytałem współpracownika, o pochodzenie w angielskim slangu określenia Grass.

Odpowiedział: Because dog *%^@ on it.

Jednak nie jestem usatysfakcjonowany taką , hmmm osobliwą(?) odpowiedzią i ta zagadka lingwistyczna nadal mnie trawi.

Czy ktoś raczy mi udzielić odpowiedzi?

Co do notki z WSJ, to wydaje mi się, że oburzenie zawsze wynika z tego, że inni postrzegają nas poprzez pryzmat jednej tylko maski społecznej. Każdy z nas nosi maski, mogę być ojcem, uczniem, pracownikiem i mistrzem niedzielnego BBQ. Podobnie każdy nosi maskę pracowniczą, ale czy zakładamy inne maski "zawodowe" w momencie w którym spotykamy się z jakimś ekstremum, np nadużyciem? Część osób na pewno, co więcej zmianę maski wyrażają poprzez działanie, na przykład zaraportowanie. I czasem mamy do czynienia z negatywnymi reakcjami części otoczenia.
