Temat: Training vs Coaching?
Hi.First of all- I'm happy to find this topic.
I already tried to figure out the difference between both definitions and was almost sure that "coaching" just an English equivalant for Polish "trening" is.
Comparing both- caoaching seems to me more emotional, more personal, maybe more interactive. It's not just showing possible ways to solve certain problems, it's more like accompanying the changes..
What do you think?

Temat: Training vs Coaching?
IMHO, training is about teaching someone new skills, while coaching is about giving a client the possibility to reflect on skills/knowledge/behaviour he/she already possesses, just in order to help him to make a better use of them.Aleksandra P. edytował(a) ten post dnia 30.11.07 o godzinie 20:29konto usunięte

Temat: Training vs Coaching?
Golf analogy:Trainer shows you how to hit the ball, hold the stick and master your swing.
"Just do as I tell you and the rest will follow"
"Golfing is great, let me tell you a story"
"Just hit like that and you will be at your best"
Coach watches, listens to you while you make shots and ask you questions like:
How is golfing like for you?
Why is golfing important to you?
What do you See, Feel and Hear when you golf?
What do you get out of the golf that is even more important?
What is missing in your swing still that you would like to have?
Think of the time when you were relaxed when you golfed?
What resources you may potentially need to perform at your own best?
1. PILOT VS TRAFFIC CONTROLLER
Person conducting a Training i.e Trainer being a charismatic speaker, a kind of a comedian to entertain the masses VS the so called "Traffic controller" the Coach, the primary listener and conversational partner.
2. SPEAK OUT VS LISTEN
Training requires a great story telling ability, visual aids (to draw on relevant examples as well kind of mentoring in a way (being a mentor to a large group of audience) and Coaching well mostly about knowing when to pause and let the client reflect on his thoughts, create space for exploration.
3. SUPERIOR EXPERT VS SUPPORTER
The trainer is imparting knowledge of a specific, technical area or helping trainees learn skills and knowledge which, when they return to the workplace, they hopefully develop and build upon to become more experienced in their field.
The Coach, supports the Client through out his journey, stays dissociated, alert and keeps the client on the set track.
4. FACT VS RELATIONSHIP
Training is fact-oriented, a building up a relationship is possible, but a "side effect", Coaching is relationship-oriented with an objective to build up a relationship.
5. RETORIC VS OPEN-ENDED
Training does not require deepening questions rather retorical, logical and fact-defeating approach, In Coaching the biggest part of the game is in the proper questioning thus allowing the Client to search in deeper and wider into their Unconscious mind.
6. GROUP VS TEAM
Training is more typically carried out in a group – Coaching is usually a one-to-one process and is tailored to the individual’s needs unless we are dealing with Team Coaching.
7. INSTRUCTION VS GUIDANCE
In the training, the Trainer determines the contents and the agenda of the exercises and gives deliberate instructions
In Coaching however, Coach and client determine the contents and the agenda together; the responsibility of the action lays on the Client and Coach guides the Client throughout the process.
8. ONE OFF VS SYSTEMIC
Training may be one off, irregular with an intention to pass on certain knowledge, Coaching is more of a process carried out systematically.
9. WOW YOUR AUDIENCE VS VALUE YOUR CLIENT
Training is all about making sure that audience is Wowed, living the hype, Trainer gets a round of applause by judging and sometimes triggering attention by forms of criticism or comparisons in Coaching the true value is for the client, Coach appreciates the chance to participate in the journey of the Client in a non-judgemental manner.
10. MONOLOGUE VS DIALOGUE
Self explanatory.
11. DIRECTIVE VS NON-DIRECTIVE
Training is a process driven by the trainer - he or she delivers to a specification. It is a directive process.
Coaching is owned by the coachee, they define the outcomes and support required - it is largely a non directive process.
12. LEARNING VS LEARNING
While training and coaching both promote learning, they do so in different ways.
13. EXPERTISE VS PSYCHOTHERAPY
Training being usually restricted to a professional instruction is driven mostly on the basis of the expertise of the Trainer, Coaching often involves psychotherapeutic methods and interventions where the focus is on the client.
14. SKILL vs BELIEFS and BEHAVIOURS
Training focuses on raising or altering skills (what the person does )whereas coaching focuses on beliefs, behaviours,
The trainer is imparting knowledge of a specific, technical area or helping trainees learn skills and knowledge which, when they return to the workplace, they hopefully develop and build upon to become more experienced in their field. Coaching when used in conjunction with training can be used to ensure that the training is absorbed and used by the trainee. Coaching helps extend the retention of learned knowledge and aid its bedding into the long-term memory and way of working.
However coaching can be used as a stand-alone tool to develop individuals per se. It allows people to explore their goals and values, how they are aligned to the business they work for, and what their goals and aims are for their life and work. It also encourages people to confront self-limiting beliefs and step out of their comfort zone, knowing they have the, non-judgemental and confidential, support of their coach. The coach will challenge them and encourage them to develop their own innate abilities and focus on their positive achievements.
