A Culture of Learning: Turning Values Into Actions
Chief Learning Officer (11/01/08) Ershaghi, Marsha
Creating an environment of learning starts with stressing workforce development, while maintaining it involves collaboration among learners and matching programs to primary organizational objectives. Learning cultures thrive in organizations that consistently reinforce the value of learning. A holistic attitude towards learning, including the firm's values, ethical decision making, and corporate risks, is needed when establishing a learning environment. When a company attempts to change its corporate environment through values-based learning, it is wise to set the tone at the top and ask executives to describe the overall culture to decide whether they regard it as a learning culture. Leveraging several learning channels within a company is a great way to involve the workforce through awareness building and activities that can gradually produce changes. It is crucial to distill data for adult learners, instead of increasing, elaborating, and making distracting sounds. When there are changes in the marketplace or competitive situations occur, it is vital that a company's learning environment is flexible and ready to alter its program to benefit the company. Viable learning environments create strategies and procedures that provide them with insight into how talent allocation best matches with corporate objectives and needs.
