Temat: Influenza shots

It’s that time again; time to get your flu shots. In the US the craze hits offices, schools and other work places around now with lines forming at your local flu centers.

Are you one of those people who get these preventive shots? If so, have you ever had the pleasure of dealing with the flu virus?
Do you know your vaccination facts?

The reason I am asking this is pretty simple – these shots are not really as effective as pharmaceutical companies would like you to believe.

1. They protect from only a single strain of it, while each season spawns several of them.
2. It takes about a year to develop these shots and another six months to get approved, while it takes approximately six months for the strain to mutate.

Yes.

I know.
1. They protect from only a single strain of it, while each season spawns several of them.

Are you sure about it? The one I got in Europe was a mix of a few serotypes. Maybe it works differently in the US.
2. It takes about a year to develop these shots and another six months to get approved, while it takes approximately six months for the strain to mutate.

Possibly but some antigens stay the same so even though they may not be spot on they will still trigger one's immune system to be more alert.

It's a conspiracy! Well, it is in New Jersey. Come December 31st, if my daughter does not get the flu shot, she cannot return to the public pre-school at the library in January. I'm not aware of the other states, but New Jersey is the first to pass this law, but it's only for public schools, private schools are exempt from this, as they have their own policies. So, if you're rich you don't have to inject your kids with cooties.

ps - I have never had a flu vaccine in my life. I got the flu twice when I was 8. Ask any of my friends how often I get sick. Once, maybe twice a year, tops. I'm trying to follow that trend with my own kids, but it's against the law now.Kari Wolk edytował(a) ten post dnia 11.11.08 o godzinie 16:53

Just some literature to consider before getting your shots. I've never had the flu and I've never had the shot either. I work in an office of 20 people, last year after the Influenza shots were administered, my office was literally wiped out.

The paragraph concernig protection reiterates what Marcin said in relation to a boost even though maybe not being "spot on," I think. I would trust those shots for myself if I decided to take the time. I'm all for prevention. Everyone is. It's even such a fundamental priniciple in veterinary medicine bevcause we cant pay 200 dollars for a pound of bacon. I just don't like hearing that you are given a public health directive concerning your kids and these shots.

Thanks, Joj. Especially considering they contain poisonous components. I still shudder when my children get the typical vaccines.

Fair enough. I reckon I can understand why they are concerned.

However, I would not subscribe to that point of view given very circumstantial data and lack of corroborating evidence and studies as pointed out by CDC and IOM.

Well, given that there is no data supporting otherwise, I'd rather not take something that may or may not be good for me, then take it. It's a game of Russian roulette.

Well, I'm no scientist, but the last time I checked, detergents and formaldehyde are poisonous and anything that seems as though it will NOT protect my children from getting sick is not worth the risk. My pediatrician asked me if I wanted to give my daughter and son the vaccine and stressed that they may still get the flu. This is coming from an office that offered a nasal steroid to relieve sinus irritation that will eventually go away by itself. Just trying to use my noggin on this one. My children's immunizations are up to date, but I won't, however, give them the chicken pox vaccine because it's optional - and I see flu shots as being optional as well. If there's no evidence to support their effectiveness, why mess around with it?

That sucks. I hope they will step back on that.

I had a flu vaccine years ago just for once. I don't know whether it was the same thing or not but it was the first time I've ever heard about it (in 1987 I guess). That winter I didn't get sick.

But lately I get to hear a lot of bad stories about people getting sick (in Poland) because of the shots and they claim that's a normal thing. That's f*#&n crazy, honestly. I will get a flu shot, and will walk around half-sick for 2 weeks?!! Are you nuts?!!

Something must have changed in between. I mean, between the shots of 1987 in Turkey and shots of 2008 in Poland.

It's easy! More sick people - more over the counter remedies sold and more flu shots sold. Conspiracy, I tell you. Exploit people's fears, bla bla bla.

Well, here is the thing, one of the side effects that sometimes comes up after the influenza vaccine is haha.. flu like symptoms about one to two weeks after the vaccination. So you may not get the flu, but you will feel like you got it shortly after the shot. On top of that, you may still get the virus, because there are no guarantees that the vaccine works to begin with.

I never have flu shots and never have them given to my son, either. A friend of mine is an immunologist and never advises her family to take them.
