Do Scousers still have perms and moustaches these days?

I doubt it, but then again I don't actually live there.

I don't think I've ever seen any Scousers having perms since I moved here in Oct 2007. I've seen a few with a moustache, tho. :)

Unfortunately, Harry Enfield's Scousers are a bit dated by now.

But that was the stereotype 20 odd years ago.warren whitmore edytował(a) ten post dnia 13.04.08 o godzinie 16:32

True, but the series is quite amusing and a good example of what the scouse accent sounds like. It's also a great example how the English are able to make fun of themselves - nobody gets offended and when I hear jokes about Poles in Merseyside I know they are not directed against me or my Polish mates - Scousers just love to have a laugh without taking things too personally. Besides, I've never heard anything nasty about my country. The people I have had the chance to talk usually say positive things, although their experience of Poland is usually limited to "a weekend in Kraków" - it's funny how they tend to view the whole country from this perspective and they are always surprised when I tell them that quite the contrary, most Polish pubs "aren't in the basements" :)Patrycja P. edytował(a) ten post dnia 13.04.08 o godzinie 18:22

Crossing the Mersey on a ferry to get to "over de water" (the Wirral Peninsula) is a must for every tourist. While admiring the wonderful panorama of the city:

they will have the chance to listen to this song by Gerry & The Pacemakers - Ferry Across The Mersey [1965] - a soundtrack to the film of the same title:

Living 'over de water' I've had the chance to cross the river on a ferry on several occasions and believe me, they play the song every time - no, not live ;). People commuting to work and for whom it is a daily means of transport and feel sick (or seasick) may use Kingsway Tunnels as there's no bridge over the river.

BTW, the song used to be so popular around the globe in the 60's that today even some Americans know that Liverpool is situated along the Mersey. We hate stereotypes, don't we? ;)Patrycja P. edytował(a) ten post dnia 14.04.08 o godzinie 22:59

Do they play "You'll never walk alone" as you disembark?

I don't know if you know that Liverpudlians have a reputation for being mawkish, generally feeling sorry for themselves, considering themselves as victims. Boris Johnson, the Conservative candidate for London mayor, made the mistake of actually saying this during an interview (or in an article???) and of course upset them. He had to apologise and pretent that he didn't mean it, or something.

Hehe, no. Nice idea :)

Maybe that's the reason why Polish immigrants get on so well with Scousers ;) Another stereotype added to the collection :)

Jokes aside, it's true that they tend to divide their lives into two periods: "before" and "after" the recession of the 80's and they look back often but I've never got the impression that they consider themselves as victims - well, maybe because I meet them mostly in pubs and they are rather cheerful then :) and the professional relations are limited to talks about work-related things? But still, I find them quite happy - as far as I can judge from these rather skin-deep relations.
