Temat: The Best of Grunge

This is what I've been listening to lately - thanks to other Anglosphere threads. And today I got captivated by touching lyrics and smoky voice of the late Layne Staley of Alice in Chains / Mad season. One of their best songs:

Mad Season - Long gone day

Layne Staley died around April 5, 2002 of heroin/cocaine overdose. The saddest thing is that his own father did drugs with him, as he reveals in one of his last interviews http://www.vh1.com/news/articles/1470138/20030225/alic...

Rafał, Thanks, I couldn't for the life of me remember the name of the song. I used to mosh to that in student clubs throughout Europe (well, Dublin and Leipzig), and often follow it with The Offspring's Self Esteem. This was when they -and we- were the right age for what they did!

Hang on a sec! Is this what you call grunge? I have always thought that grunge is about Nirvana, Mudhoney, all these Sub Pop label artists. Sonic Youth were a lot earlier than grunge and they inspired grunge artists . Blut - grunge? Don't think so:) It's Brit pop.

You are correct, but just like every other genre, grunge too became somewhat of a mainstream sound. Nirvana was pretty pop is you ask me ;).. Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Fugazi etc etc... that was who pretty much paved the way for others. Sort of like when someone would say techno... what is your first and foremost idea? Catch my drift?

I'm always correct unless I'm incorrect ;) Nirvana's early stuff is far from pop if you ask me :) Sonic Youth have been around for ages and yes they have paved the way for other bands. Mudhoney was in the same kind of league as Nirvana but they were never so huge! Fugazi is a different kettle of fish if you ask me. They have nothing to do with grunge. It's more like American punk rock, sort of like GBH, Dead Kennedys etc.
