"Weird alien races are out. Characters and less techno-babble are in."
At NBC’s Summer Press Tour, STARGATE UNIVERSE creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper spoke about how different this latest STARGATE series would be from the previous TV series.
“We wanted to do something new and different,” says Wright of the series which will debut this fall on the newly branded Syfy. "We came up with a notion of doing something very, very different. Other than the Stargate, which is at the core of our show, a whole lot of other stuff is different from other series and it’s something we’re proud of.”
In terms of how different UNIVERSE will be, its an attempt to include newer viewers to the franchise without alienating die-hards – which means there won’t be characters running around with rubber masks on their faces portraying alien races.
“We felt that ATLANTIS and SG1 had gotten too self-referential and too far into their own mythologies and we wanted to make a show that is broader and more accessible to audiences of science fiction,” says Cooper. “We felt we had told a lot of STARGATE stories -- 300 or so – and we had to come up with a way to make it fresh and to tell stories through new characters eyes and really emphasize their perspectives. The great thing about STARGATE-- it takes place now. It’s contemporary. We have characters from our world. It takes place on earth. We want our STARGATE fanbase to join us, but if the mainstream audience is out there – we would like them too.”
