Temat: Will my child speak English?

I have a little girl born in Poland aged 2.My wife who is Polish speaks English 30% of the time to her while I do all the time. My wife speaks English to me most of the time and Polish only when she is angry -which is besides the point of this thread.

My daughter understands 100% of what I say in English but nearly all her words and sentences are in Polish. Needless to say I am jealous and I fear the day when her Polish will be better than my intermediate level Polish.

Anyone share something similar or better still words of comfort.

Here where I live I know an American couple with 2 kids (7,8) who send them to our Polish primary school. They have a private tutor to help them with the homework and Polish in general. The kids will become bilingual probably.
The parents speak English to them, and the rest of the world - Polish.

But each family's situation is obviously very different.

They will be bilingual. I am only using English at home, but that’s because I want my daughter to have a solid English background before being completely submerged in the Polish speaking world. My son is only 9 months but he also will be used to the sound of the English language before introducing him to Polish. We are sending my kids to regular Polish pre schools so they can learn Polish and not have to worry about tutoring and such.
I can tell you on the examples that I see here in the US with some foreign kids. It is a long and hard process at first. If you know how the brain works when it processes language, the predominant one will always come first, but what may happen is that they will address your wife in Polish and you in English. Up until the 5 – 7 (I think that was the range if I remember correctly), kids can manage to handle multiple languages with ease it’s a matter of exposure and seems to me that you are doing well. Kari (my wife) was helping out at one point with a Polish child who had issues with English in school simply because all he heard at home was Polish… it didn’t take long for him to get on track…

My oldest child Sebby is 5,5 years old and speaks both languages fluently. His Polish is possibly slightly better but only slightly. His English is fantastic.

The younger one, Danny, is 2,5 years old and started speaking later than Sebby did. He's now communicating in both languages. Sebby speaks to him in both English and Polish depending on the context.

Sebby is able to translate between the two languages.

Both children have spent the vast majority of their lives in Poland and the vast majority of their time with Poles in a Polish speaking environment

I'm sort of billingual

I was born in Poland and moved to Macedonia (then Yugoslavia) at the age of 3-4. They say i was speaking Polish only for a year after that. I was raised at home until I was 5 so my mother (she was bored)taught me to read and write both in Polish and Macedonian at home so i could read both Cyrilic and the Latin alphabet by the time I was 5-6. After that I went to a Macedonian school and Polish was only for holidays, even tough I had around 50 LPs with fairy tales (I still remember most of them, I can recite to around 20 hours of fairy tales when played so I know the whole winnie pooh or Alice in wonderland by heart - i mean the books, in Polish), i read lots of books in Polish and occasionally used it at home and with other Polish families in Macedonia.
After I turned 18 I went back to Poland to study, first it was difficult to catch up with the slang (words like jarac, spoko, zajebisty etc), and I practiced a little spelling but it was ok after a month.

Today I make an occasional declention mistake, but hardly anyone can say that I grew up somewhere else. My Macedonian, however, is getting worse and worse...

Because everyone she knows in the world, apart from myself, speaks to her in that language.
