WHAT: the Center for Book Arts invites submissions to its annual Poetry Chapbook Competition. The winning manuscript will be chosen in April 2009 and will be awarded with the publication of a beautifully designed, letterpress-printed, limited-edition chapbook printed and bound by artists at the Center for Book Arts. The edition is limited to 100 signed and numbered copies, ten of which are reserved for the author and the remainder of which will be offered for sale through the Center. The winning poet will also receive a cash award of $500, and a $500 honorarium for a reading, to be held at the Center in the fall of 2009.

Green Earth

WHAT: designboom and the DA design association Japan have joined together, along with Tobu Department Store to organize the 'green earth' international design competition. Tobu Department Store is affiliated with World Heritage Kew Gardens and helps organize campaigns to help raise awareness and protect the earth. For the competition 'green earth' designers are asked to enter projects in to one or both of the following categories. 'Green':create a graphic artwork that illustrates environmental protection and how human beings and nature could coexist in a greener world. 'Earth': give the gift of a greener world at Christmas - create a graphic artwork that will make this festive time of the year a moment to consider what we can do to help our planet's survival.

The Textile Directory's Spellbinding Textiles Competition

WHAT: textile competition with the theme of magic. Entrants are invited to produce an item based on their interpretation of this theme. The overall winner of the competition will win £1000 to spend on Pfaff products. The best 30 pieces entered into the competition will be exhibited in The Forge Mill Needle Museum, Redditch in February 2009.

Launched last year, the competition to find the East Midlands Designer of the Year was a massive hit and has become an annual event in the agency’s calendar. In the last 12 months, momentum around the competition has increased which has led to the Style Editor, Poppy Norton, of Grand Designs Magazine joining the judging panel.

The theme of the competition is a movable architecture gallery, containing and distributing design to the city; travels across the River Thames to connect the various art spaces and collect visitors along the river; especially in the South Bank. WHAT: Andreu World announces the 8th International Design Competition Andreu World, which, now in its 8th edition, has a great amount of participants, both Spanish and international. The subject of the competition is the design of a seat and/or a table and the main material to be used is solid wood: beech, oak or walnut. To participate, a piece must be designed to include all specifications outlined in Andreu Worlds product Briefing, providing technical and formal solutions in compliance with the terms indicated. The designs presented have to be new, not having been marketed or disclosed prior to the date of the competition.

British Sari Story

WHAT: a national competition offering a top prize of £250 to the person who creates a vision of a British Bridal Sari – reflecting the hopes, dreams and experience of a British Asian bride. Most bridal sari patterns still originate in south Asia – but the British Sari Story 2008 competition is calling for people around the UK to create their own, British embroidery, embellishment and beading. The top entries will join the British Sari Story touring exhibition – a glorious display of traditional and contemporary saris which celebrates British Asian heritage. The name of the overall winner will be unveiled when the show is opened at Charnwood Museum, Loughborough, in early October.
