"# Using the WIA driver there is no GUI to create the INI file with, so copy the INI file created using ScanImage.exe to the following location: C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService (XP: C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService, a hidden system folder). This is the default location, and depends on the user the Windows Image Acquisition service is running. By default this is "Local Service", and you should be able to change this to a regular user account (thereby sharing the same INI file between the EXE and WIA), by clicking on the Start button, selecting "Run..." and typing services.msc and hitting Enter. Right-click on the WIA service, and check the "Log On" tab for more details.
# Error reporting by WIA is a bit spartan; for a rudimentary first check, on the "Scanners and Cameras" window, click once on the SaneWIA device, and press the "Properties" button. The "Optical Resolution" should match your scanner, or will show 0x0 if there is a problem (note that the "Test Scanner" button has no function for SaneWIA)
# If the proper resolution is shown, SaneWIA should be available for use. If not, double check the location of the INI file. It is possible to enable a WIA debug log, see e.g. this KB-article. Another option would be to use Procmon.exe from the Microsoft site, and set the filter to "Path incudes sane", which should show all attempts to load the DLL and the INI file. "
