I think that training its mostrly in groups in some kind od 'training room', and its based on case studies and stuff like this.
And coaching is in sytuation when we are in action (on the job) witch someone for instance sales rep or manager and then we give him a peace of advise.

Am I wright? :)

Dear Marcin,
Yes and NO. Let's wait and see what others say. Then, I'll sure define it the proper way and sketch the philosophy behind it.

Hey Guys, to my mind and that goes in harmony with ENERGIZERS: coaching always focuses on growing talents, NOT fixing weaknesses (like a therapy or training, at times). More viewpoints are warmly welcome.

Hi,
first of all I'm wondering why are we writing in English, as GL is not available in English version? Anyway:

According to Mark & Mike from http://www.manager-tools.com/ , training is about providing people with knowledge on specific topics (like preparing presentatins, coding in Java or interviewing ppl). On the other hand, the term coaching is much wider. It's about leveraging people's skills and it involves identyfing goals to be achieved, gathering and analyzing data about current performance, as well as developing an "acting contract" (what should by achieved by when) and identyfing resources simplyfing that. And one of such a resource can be a training.

Cheers,
Kuba

Dear Jakub,
Thanks alot for you contribution! I do value it alot. Let me repeat my mantra: 'coaching' always focuses on growing talents, NOT fixing weaknesses...
BTW, why English - 1) that's the policy of this interest group. 2) I got promised that people were working on the GL in English.
Cheers,
bart

My personal view on this one is that:

Training is about giving clear directions, solutions, tools, when coaching is about guiding, inspiring, opening eyes and going beyond bounderies by ie. just asking right questions :).

You're right about talents, coaching is way more effective and appropriate when dealing with hi-pots. But still I think it is usually takes more time than to train same talent.

You train your hard-workers and coach all the pearls that are flying high :)

Besides, manager trains, when leader coaches.

Hope it somehow adds up not only for me :).

take care!

educational relation between mother and her child

How do You think - is it training or coaching?

I guess...both of them :). The older the kid the more you coach and less you train or rather preach :).Łukasz Sadowski edytował(a) ten post dnia 22.06.07 o godzinie 22:33

Hi there,

It is an interesting point - you even say that you learn children new things. However for me it is not proper question - training or coaching. I think that in growing process of child there are pieces of different methods: training, coaching and other instruments beacuse of special relations between mother and children. Mother has to love her child and give him or her as much good emotions as possible. Only when love battery is load there is good point to start learning new things and 'open eyes'.

The essence of coaching individuals, teams or even oneself is raising awareness and responsibility, two vital ingrediens of performance.
Awareness increases input, interest, learning and recall. Responsibility is generated by offering choice which leads to self-esteem, confidence, and self motivation.
Both awareness and responsibility are states of mind, and the mind is the key.
Knowledge and experience are more important for the performance, but neither are half as important as the state of mind of the performer, and that is the area on which coaching works.

Hi,

I agree with first part of your speak, but second is little be disturbing for me. There is many trainers which works as coaches.

Coach lead person beyond limitation of training context reality.
It's impossible to work on personal level with personal limitation of client on workshop.

Bart ask about the difference between C v. T.

Coaching – a goal of coaching is to develop and to improve personal abilities and behavior of client. It could be process of learning new strategies, behaviors or improving existing one. The task of coach is support client in teaching process to achieve designed outcomes. The coach is responsible for way to achieve the task and relationship.
During coaching coach CAN work with individual fears, resistance, weakness problematic context (public speaking fear). Coach CAN and should use STRONG part of client personality, experience, etc.

Training – a goal of training is teach person(s) new information, knowledge, practice. There is time for personal question, which support process of learning, but there is no time for improving of personal abilities. The only method of supporting one person during training is work with trans and metaphors - but it's can be done only in "soft" training not on "hard" one.

Hello Lukasz,

Not sure if you understood me correctly or maybe I don't understand your reply.

For me that's OK to work both as trainer and coach.

By limitation I meant answers you have to player problems. Your answers are framed by your knowledge, skills, experience, etc. - in this way they are limited. In training you mainly give "answers" to build knowledge and skills (which is ok). As a coach you help a coachee/player to seek solution and help him to put his/her frames (limitations) into perspective so that it does not limit him to find the best solution.

I hope it's more clear to you now.

cheers,
Damian

Hi there

Training is about delivering instructions, telling someone what to do and setting down how to do it while coaching is about providing space to perform and do things differently coupled with guiding and encouraging. That's management style that holds focus more on individual and less on tasks.

Technically coaching is about any discussion between leader and subordinate aimed to provide one with assistance to uphold or improve one’s performance.

Best regards

ok and what about the relationship in coaching and training? I believe that besides some other differences that have already been mentioned there is yet another one - the relationship between a coach a coachee and that between a trainer and a trainee. What do you think?
