Thank you. Your answer makes sense and it does give reasons as to why he got the prize.

What I meant was that I thought that was how the Commiittee acounted for him getting the Prize, which would have been pure nonsense if they had. Since they hadn't, I rest my case.

He said he's surprised himself.

Some people here say that it's unforunate that his "star power" outweighed the tireless efforts of those who did real work.

The President himself says he doesn't consider it to be a recognition of his only eight months of accomplishments, but rather an encouragement to continue improving international relations.

The President himself says he doesn't consider it to be a recognition of his only eight months of accomplishments, but rather an encouragement to continue improving international relations.

I think Obama is going in the right direction but it's too early to award him with the Nobel Peace Prize. I'm sure he will get a lot of criticism but it's not his fault that the committee chose him...

IMO the whole idea of peace Nobel is a joke. In sciences you have some decent metrics to weigh peoples' achievements against. With this one you don't and hence this tomfoolery. Now, if Arafat and Gorbachev and Chamberlain got the Nobel, there must be something wrong with peace Nobel committee. Mind you, there were a few bloopers with phys med and chemistry as well (e.g. lobotomy and Faber) but all in all, Nobels for sciences have never appeared that controversial.

Well the scientists stick on doing their job based on scientific research and rules that have been worked out for ages..hence their job can be accountable and IS understandable, while the politics and literature (yes, I think that Herta Mueller Nobel prize is a joke as well) are ruled by trends, moods and ..guess what - politics. :]
