Temat: Merry Fucking Christmas

I personally dislike all festive occasions especially Christmas.

All Saints Day is my favourite. The 1st of November is a date all Poles should be proud of and I dont know of any country that has a more beautiful tradition. For me its a time of reflection and remembrance . Halloween is a waste of Pumpkin. Easter a waste of paint and eggs. Christmas is just a waste of time.

Christmas is like all the foreplay without the sex. Promising but always fails to deliver. Any thoughts

I personally believe Christmas and other (especially religious) holidays are what you make it.

Try going against the tide, so you're not bothered by the commercialism of the holiday and focus on the most important things at that time :)

nobody forces you to take part in it.

I hate it how religious events become a TRADITION and all its sacred force is forgotten.

I am not particularly religious but the fact that Christmas is so commercialised just kills me.

It also kills me in Poland when people who want to get married and just CAN'T make it without the beautiful ceremony in a church but "oh no, i don't believe in that dude jesus" DO take part in all the sacred preparations, go to the confessional JUST for the sake of standing in front of the altar "because that's what everyone does/because a bride should wear the most astonishing white dress" - it's stupid, it's pathetic, it's hipocrisy.

If you're an atheist, act as one.

And the fact that 99,9% of the world's population breathes about 20 times a minute is a waste of air, right?

I love crappy gifts, they make the world go round. I even like the idea of recycling them, which means I get the same blue fake crystal vase every five years and I don't mind.

Once a year it's more than fun. All those stories to tell and listen to! The never ending discussions about politics, Aunt Mary's arthritis, and Christmas indigestion!

We have a tradition of potluck Christmas, which means, as my family is somewhat strange, both carp (yuck), goose (yeah!), pierogi, and dishes that are not even near the traditional barszcz, but mean Christmas to us. We set up the tables in all homes (family and close friends), and spend the time visiting people, eating or not, having a good time. We serve wine at the Wigilia table, deep fry fish fingers for the kids, play video games to see who can beat Uncle J. (name withheld), go out, play in the snow...

And, sometimes, once every two or three years, some of us spend Christmas away from it all, and that is just fine as well.

To me, Christmas is the equivalent of Thanksgiving, and I celebrate it as such.

I am not particularly religious but the fact that Christmas is so commercialised just kills me.

Poland is nothing compared to the UK and Ireland with most shops gearing up and setting up for Christmas once Halloween has gone.
Its mostly to do with splurging out on gifts,indulging yourself, and being constantly reminded to be merry.
A survey was done asking teenagers what Christmas was actually commemorating and the biggest precentage didnt know (the exact statistics elude me-around 80%). Answers ranging from " something to do with jesus" or "buying presents" .
Its very true that any event is what you make of it. Regarding marriage my wife and I got married in a registery office and I was back in work two hours later. It was the best marraige I ever had:) Seriously. All our friends turned up at the town hall when we expected it to be just the two of us and witnesses.

I like Christmas and other Important Occasions because they're the few times that my clients show some kind of understanding that I cannot do something for them overnight. So it's good workwise ;)

Lets not get our knickers in a twist about the thread title. Feel free to share your comments about christmas regardless of whether you like it or not. Its not a whinging thread its just my observation about Christmas and the christmasses that will never be the same.

hehe.. I am actually fighting hard to not have my kids christened, my father in law is this old school Italian guy from Bensonhurst Brooklyn (probably doesn't tell you much... think Goodfellas haha) but he is hardcore into the whole Jesus thing and is seriously pressing us to get it done... it's not happening.
As per Christmas and other holidays… eh.. at least we get some time off to spend with our family members, other than that they are a total waste of time.

Lidia I am not even hinting that you should remove your posts,cant you see its just a discussion and nothing more on christmas and different peoples opinion of it.
I actually believe this thread is a bit late- check many shops now and you will see the beginnings of Christmas.

Rafal stick to your guns and your inlaws will have a quiet respect that you stuck to your own beliefs. I never went to my own daughters christening at the church. I waited outside in the car at the church.I still feel good about it although at the time I did feel a bit of a stubborn muppet in front of everyone on the day.
