In Warsaw:

There is a nice lil pub that I know of in Stare Miasto - Krolewski Pub... I liked the atmosphere there, nothing too fancy... but intimate sort of dim place right smack in the middle of everything so no matter where you are staying...

On the snobby side:

The specialty is, of course, a suckling pig. Baked whole. A friend of mine, from Japan, got a piece of piglet butt with a tail on her plate. The meat is delicious, and, as you might be able to see in the picture, to prove it's so tender, the cook cuts it with a plate.

Apart from that, there's generally no place I like a lot or often go to. For lunch, I visit Jadłostacja near my office (serves great veg moussaka), I sometimes go to Tatiana in Katowice (nice food, great apple pie), but also Sphinx or Pizza Hut. For clubs, I used to go to Grzesznicy w Niebie (obviously) on Friday nights, but that was at least 6 years ago. Don't go out much now, except occasionally with a girl friend. I enjoy eating out, and do so when I'm away.
For beers, I like the park here. There's a bar/restaurant that has a playground for the kids to play, ideal to spend some time on a Sunday afternoon.

In the States, well, suffice it to say I used to live for some time very close to the 6th Street in Austin.

In NYC for a while my favorite was

Mamoun's Fallafel

Literally a hole in the wall type place with the best fallafels in NYC by far.

There is an excellent Indian food spot two blocks North of the World Trade Center on Church St. called Bengal Curry; also very small but seriously great food.

In my town - Bayonne

Pattaya - Japanese - Thai althought they've gone cheap on me lately and food is just not what it used to be.

Alex & Terry's Deli
For all real home made Polish food! Made on the spot. They even make their own horseradish every Christmas... excellent!Rafal W. edytował(a) ten post dnia 30.07.08 o godzinie 13:45

I used to go to Zorba Greek Restaurant in Round Rock. Best Greek food ever (I've never been to Greece though)

Maybe visiting new places gives you a thrill, but sometimes we long for a regular hangout, a venue where we know everybody and are likely to be recognised by other patrons.

The very place has a two-century old partying tradition, and the modern decor reflects some playful shades of that past (i.e. Lempicka's omnipresent spirit).

I don't feel too old there, as the average age is similar to mine, perhaps higher. No crowd, no stepping on your blue suede shoes. French artists playing live - jazzy vocal lounge. The cars outside remind you of Monaco.

I've met some Swiss, Argentinian, Spanish and Japanese people there.

Yep.

As the Czech say, "to se ne vrati".

After four years or so, the place is currently being refurbished. With the autumn opening looming ahead, I'm full of anticipation.

In the meantime, I frequent Platinium, which is quite pleasant but excessively crowded. :(Adam Lipiński edytował(a) ten post dnia 30.07.08 o godzinie 20:43

Adam,

Would this venue be suitable for our Anglosphere meeting? If not, can you suggest anything?

Nope. First, it's being refurbished (=closed). Then, it's a club, so later on it gets quite loud.

For our meeting I'd suggest a quiet place, with a lot of room.

It's called NU Jazz Bistro, in Żurawia St.

(then click on the proper venue - NU Jazz Bistro)

There is subtle jazz in the background, the tables can be rearranged. And, no matter how busy it is, everyone can be heard. It serves nice drinks and decent food -- and there's plenty of parking space outside. Excellent for business meetings and dates. For smokers, it has a great mezzanine area.

My favourite place in Wroclaw is called Manana. This is also one of the most chaotic places in Wroclaw therefore it doesn't have a webpage:) I came across some videos tough...

http://pl.youtube.com/watch?v=vaBqNtU2BsI&feature=related

they grasp a little of its charm

p.s lots of people in Wroclaw hate it. I wish they were hating it even more so it wouldn't be so overcrowded. I prefer it somewhere in Sunday or Monday evening when suddenly a quiet evening out and a small beer turns into the best party you've ever had. It's totally unpredictable.

http://pl.youtube.com/watch?v=5QBlKKzrIi0

The music is sometimes great and sometimes dull and repetitive. Somehow people have fun every time:) If all seats are taken no problem, you can always sit next to somebody else and meet new people.

Many foreigners come here, sometimes more expats than Poles. Since my crew is pretty much international it seems like a great place to hang out. Once in a few months the owner organizes special parties with free drinks and food:)(officially invite only but everybody can enter as long as there are not too many people already in). Example of such a party in the video:
