I love ska, Kari is more partial to it.. she prefers the straight out of Jamaica ska, where I dig the punk side of it.I used to frequent ska shows a lot in NYC... most places that held those are unfortunately closed down now.

Ya man, de riff on de old school ska beat dem white cats out de water man. I had a box set of old ska and went gaga over it. I used to bring it to the boutique I worked at and jam out to it all day long. Sales always went up when I ruled the CD player. Don Drummond was a brilliant trombonist and composer.

Riff is a short repeated pattern.A melody or a solo is not a riff.
Riff usually starts and continues throughout the song/piece, or repeats few times. It characterizes/differentiates the song/piece from the others.
It is the most distinctive part of a musical piece, though there can be a musical piece without any riffs.
